TURF GOSSIP. Nominations for the "Wanganui Jockey CluVs Winter Meeting close today. Acceptances for the Ainberley Racing Club's annual race meeting close 011 "Wednesday, May sth. Nominations for the Oaniaru T.C.'s Winter Meeting close to-day at 8 p.m. Charlatan, with E. Shaw in the saddle, was schooled at Riccarton on Saturday morning, jumping seven fences in good &lyle. Mr Barielt s horse will have his first outing at the Egmant Steeplechase Meeting, followed "by the Wanganui and Auckland winter gatherings.

Gay Jim, who was a contestant at Timaru each day, has been taken over Ivy F. P. Claridge at Riccarton on tehalf of his owner, Mis 9 L. Boyle. Sprinkler, brother to Pilliewinkie, is ire regular work at Riccarton, and appears quite sound. Ho is carrying a plentiful supply of solid condition, and js receiving "a lot of extra work to reduce his avoirdupois. He galloped three furlongs on the plough at Riccarton on Saturday morning mid gave every encouragement that his early prospects will be fulfilled, provided lie stands up to hard training. R. Emerson has in work at Riccarton a. chestnut two-year-old filly named Queen's Bounty, by Clarenceux out of Bountiful, who is showing great promise. She sprinted two furlongs on Saturday morning and showed plenty of pace. An attractive two-year-old colt by Governor-General, purchased in Sydney by J. McCombe at the Easter sales, was ridden on to the Riccarton' track on Saturday morning and was much admired. McCombe'k four other Australian yearlings have been broken in and are being ridden in view of being put through their facings for next season's racing. Deucalion has> greatly improved by the two creditable races he ran at Timarii, and, judging by the manner in which he worked at Riccarton on Saturday morning, 'there is every reason to predict an early success for the aged son of Demosthenes. The Riecarton-owned King Abbey in A. E. AVormald's stable.gave a good exhibition of jumping at the South Canterbury Meeting, but ho fell both days. Ho was in the lead on each occasion, but was palpably tired, and even had he stood up would not have heen the victor. The ex-Aucklander was badly shaken after his mishap on the second day, and he will require a good spell before sporting silk again. «J. B. Pearson has Clareina in active commission, and she galloped over five furlongs at Riccarton on Saturday morning in satisfactory style. Pearson also has the West Coaster, Rapid Rose, in work, hut she is very backward in condition and will require a lot of building up. _ Red "Wink is being given light exercise on the Riccarton tracks, and hopes are entertained that the Great Alitumn Handicap winner of 18!2o will earn further distinction on the turf. ■ The poor class of hurdle horses competing at Timaru was most marked, and exemplified the fact that there is a dearth of jumpers in the Canterbury district. _ There are certainly great opportunities to collect big money at the South Island meetings with the aid of a good hurdler or steeplechaser. A Sydney cablegram states that at the Canterbury Park Meeting the prineipal results were:—Flying Handicap: —King Cyllene, 8.10, 1; Father's Voice, 5.9, 2; Yerrubil, 7.11, 3. Won by a • length. Time 1.14 J. Campsie Handicap:—Boonak, 8.3, 1; Alcytful, 8.6, 2; Aberfeldic, 8.7, 3. Won by two lengths, •• » length between second and third. Timo 2.461. ■■■. Luke "Wilson, at one time private "trainer to the Douglas Estate, who went to Australia with J. M. Cameron a few months ba/sk, has returned to Hastings. He is on the look-out for two or three ponies, and in all probability will return to Australia later and resume training afterwards. Maungaronga, an aged brown gelding by Depiosthenes put of Formosa, owned by Mr T. E. "Whelch and recently leased by P- P.. Neagle, fell in the Karanm Hurdles _at Hastings on Saturday and broke his neck. F. W. Elkins, his rider,; suffered a fractured jaw. Serang, who won two races at the decent Whangarei fixture, and was again successful at the Waikato Meeting Impey,. 850 guineas as a yearling. He ia a., colt by Absurd from Moira Machreo and is trained by J. Buchanaii. Our Hamilton correspondent telegraphs that during the running of the •JYankton. Hurdles at the Waikato i 'Meeting on Saturday, Tapuhi fell and C. W. Hastings, his rider, had his fright leg broken, . ,An enquiry was held at Te Rapa ; oil Saturday concerning interference i , .with Archeno and Cocoanut in the • i Trial Handicap by Red Comet, who j .Ji* as ridden by A. NOTES ON THE RACING. (special to "the THISS3.") HASTINGS, May 1. The Hawko'a Bay Jookey Club's Meeting was concluded to-day in Sna weather. Wind was almost absent, and a eliower of rain overnight made tha conditions approach the ideal. There waa a large attendance, attracted no doubt by the contest {or the Ormond Gold Cup, and although the quality of the quartette is very high, Reremoana at the distance and on the day was pxuch too good for his opponents. Opa, well ridden by M. McCarten, won tho Burke Memorial Handioap in good style from Kilobit, who showed her best form for eome time. Thfc betting was fairly spirited, the total for the day being £22,000,. compared with £30,128 last year, a total falling [ of! for the Meeting of £23,055, but last year thero was unusual interest owing to The Hawk-Gloaming contest. In the Karamu Hurdles, Little River was a good favourite, and but for a bad accident at the fence in front of the stands would have won. Mp.tmgaronga led to the second fence, where ho failed to rise, and fell, breaking his neck. He brought down Strong Holt and badly interfered with Little , River, who had to be almost pulled up. Toa Taua and Suspicion went eway in the lead from Little River, with "NVilmoreana and. Polyastra next. So they ran to the last fence, where Little River threw out a challenge, but failed to reach Toa Taua by a length and a half. Suspicion was three lengths away third, with Wilmoreana fourth and Polyastra next. F. Jenkins, the rider of Maungarongjv, received a fraotured jaw and seemed luoky to escape with his life, so ugly" looked the apill. Imitation and Plain Sailing between them carried more than half the total investments on the Pakipaki Handicap. Break o' Day whipped round as the barrier was released and took no real part in tho race. Coot and Plain Sailing led out of the barrier from Imitation, Merry Imp, and Hiwinui. So they raced to the turn, where Plain Sailing drew away from Coot, but Imitation kept up a good strong run and beat her home by. a length. Coot was five lengths away third, with Hiwinui and Merry Imp r.ext. Imitation won in good style." Decoy Bird was a hot favourite for tho Juvenile Handicap, with Inner Harbour slightly better backed than Hymgreat. Eloquent, Hymgreat, and Silver Tray began best, but Silver Tray was in front at the end of a furlong. Silver Tray led into tha straight from Eloquent, Hymgreat, Inner Harbour, and Beth, the last four being nearly on terms. Silver Tray stayed on to beat Eloquent by a length and a half, with Decoy Bird, who finished fast on tha rails, a similar distance away third. Hymgreat was, fourth and Beth next. Reremoana wound up a slightly better favourite than Rapine in the Gold Cup, then, after a big drop, coming Grand Knight only slightly more in favour than Glentruin. Grand Knight, Glentruin, and Reremoana in that order from the rails began more smartly than Rapine from an even walking up start. Reremoana and Glentruin headed Grand Knight turning into the baok straight, with Rapine two lengths way. Passing the six furlongs post Reremoana, Glentruin, and Grand Knight were divided by lengths in the order named with Rapine two lengths behind Grand Knight. Reremoana went away across the top and Grand Knight passed Glentruin and went in pursuit of Reremoana. Reremoana was always well clear, and although Grand JKnight was being ridden hard a furlong from home, ho made no imprfeeion on the leader, eo B. 11. Morris dropped his hands. Reremoana went on to win easily by a good four lengths trotu Rapine, who came fast to beat Grand Knight by half a length. Glentruin waa two lengths away fourth. Reremoana outclassed the opposition on tho day, and pulled up irety fresh. Grand Knight might have been second if ridden out to the bitter end, but Rapine finished very fast. Glentruin found the distance too far. Gaze was a good favourite for the Burke Memorial Stakes with Opa and Phoenix Park the only others backed. Wristlet soon Opened up a gobd break from Novar, Phoenix Park, Kilfaire. Kilceit, and Gaze, with Opa ast. Gaze, Kilceit, and Kilfaire were disputing the lead at tho turn, where Kilceit sad the measure of Gaze, but Opa then Lppeared with a great run and beat Kilceit >y half a length. Gaze was three lengths iway third with Kilfaire fourth and Do Luxe and Novar next. Kilceit looked a :ertainty until Opa pounced down on her. Minstrel Boy was an odds on favourite or tho Akitio Handicap, with Vivo and Coteeiou fairly well bached. Minstrel Boy, [tapiata, and Vivo began best and led Colcsion, but tho last-named stumbled and oat his rider. Minstrel Boy, Vivo, and Rapiata, on _ terms, led into the straight rom Mountain Star and Windy Night. Tho ,hree first named, all under pressure, fought >ut a great finish from tho turn, Rapiata. laating Minstrel Boy by a head, with Vivo talf a length away third. Windy Night waa fourth and Mountain Star and Wairipo next. Tho Gauntlet-My Hobby bracket wound ip favourito for the Ohiti Handicap, with tfalatour, Road Hog, and Hillation fairly veil supported. Haurangi, Malatour, and Jlandhu led out of the straight, but going lown ths back tho order was Malatour, Jurnion, Haurangi, Hillation. Clandhu, and yly Hobby. Malatour led into the straight rom Gurnion, Road Hog, Haurangi, Royal Jiadem, and My Hobby. My Hobby and ilillation were fighting out the finish when ?erl<* do Leon came from last place to join n. My Hobby beating him only by half a lead. Hillation was a head away third, ritli Haurangi fourth and Royal Diadem ind Clandhu next. Perlo de Leon was unucky, for lie was practically last at the tome turn. * Betting was spirited on the concluding vent, for which Shirley wound up a £5 beter favourite than Automns, with Peiieua

supported. Royal Damon lost ground n-" the "start. Papaponga began test, but Shirloy ran to the lead inside a, furlong, with Huikai and Automne next. At the turn Shirley was showing the tray to Huikai, Automne, Peneus, Papaponga, and Royal Damon. Both Automne and Royal Damon challenged Shirley in the straight, but she held then off, beating Automne by a head. Roval Damon' sas two lengths away third, a similar distance in front of Huikai. Serene, Standard, and Peneu3 were next.

NOTES ON THE RACING. Fortune dicl not favour tho Forbury Park Trotting Club for thb concluding day of its Winter Meeting, as xain set in overnight and several showers fell during the day. There was a large attendance, and, considering the heavy state of tho track, some interesting racing was witnessed. Speculation was again brisk, and the totalieator staff handled ±'14,725, making a total of £34,77-2 10s for the two days, compared with £63,065, an increase of £-21,707 10s. Becky Logan defeated a warm favourite in Kohara in the Victory Handicap. She was always well placed and won moat decisively at the finish, while Engagement showed improved form, and won the Peninsula Handicap from two eoaaoned horses in Proud Ata and Mangoutu. The public found some difficulty in selecting the winners, Daphne Wildwood and the bracketed horses Lennnihor and Moor Chimes being the only ones to score. Esßie Wilkes was the only scratching in the Tfthuna Handicap, leaving 22 starters. It was a fairly even betting race. Yankee Patch, owned and trained by R. Townley, was favourite, with, eolid support for Bonette, Randolph, Buck Up, and Alpha Wilkes. Several of those engaged failed to go aw/iy correctly, but when tha field had settled down Alpha Wilkes was in charge. She led from start to finish, and won by a couple of lengths from Kerrwood Bell, who rcade the winner's tas& easy by breaking in the last sixty yards. Ben Logan plodded along into third place, with Bonette fourth and Master Peter fifth, in front of a strung-out field. . Tho favourite, Yankee Patch, and Nelson Boy broke more than once, but showed up sufficiently well to suggest that they may win a atake when the company is not too select. For three-parts of the journey the Royal Handicap was ft good race, and tho final issue looked open, but at this stage Mirella, Day Pointer, and St. Thomas drew clear from tho Test of the field and had the finish to themselves. Mirella led into tho straight, with Day Pointer and St. Thomas in close attendance. Day Pointer broke, and, finishing fast, St. Thomas got up in time to make a dead-heat with the locallyowned and trained Mirella. Day Pointer finished third, five lengths away, with Logan Hanlon and Bonanza at the hepd of the others. Doris Pointer did not. leave tho mark, and Kinney Dillon faded out of the race after being prominent for a mile and a quarter. Both Mirella and St-. Thomas handled the heavy course to advantage, and paid useful dividonds. In a field of twenty horses in tho Pacific Handicap, Daphno Wildwood was installed a strong favourite, and carried more than twice as much as Hylas, who was nest in demand, with the bracketed horsoj, Mountain Chimes and Maiwhariti, the best backed of tho others. It was a poor race, and with half the journey covered Carbon, Daphne Wildwood, and Macaranda drew away from the vest of tho field, and in a good finish Daphne Wildwood won comfortably from Macaranda and Carbon, with Nipper a modernte fourth. Tho winner, Daphne Wildwood, is an aged mare by Wildwood Jun. from Hue Daphne. She is owned by the Ashhurat sportsman Mr R. Vautior, and amongst her succcssee this Beaaon is tho Hawera Trotting Cup. The Invcrcargilltrained Macaranda outstayed Carbon over tho last furlong and earned «ecoud money. With the exception of Nipper, little can be said of the others, and their poor display was no doubt due to tho heavy state of tho track. Randolph scored an overduo win in tho Improvers' Handicap. He found the going to his liking, and despito one mistake won comfortably from the favourite, Real the Great, who trotted a much better race than on tho previous day. Tim Wood camo from a. long way back, and in a good finish oefoated Nelson McKinney for third money, with Kenwood Bell fifth. The last-named trotted well for three-parts of the journey, when she gradually faded out of the racn. Some Jazz, who had started twico previously, was prominent for ten furlongs, < when he tired, and, along with tho rest of ' the field, finished some diatanco behind the ' j.laced hcr?es. The eleventh-hour withdrawal of Native Chief and Dillon Wilkes left a useful field

of cMit hordes to contest the Victory Handicap! Kchara, again found favour, and was most in demand, v.'tih Becky Logan, Talent, and Escort backed in that order. With the exception of Fashion Queen, who showed temper, the rest of the field began v.c!l, and. "led by Harold Burwood, were soon racing in close company. At the end of A mile I lie Harold Dillon horse was still in charge, followed by Kohara, Becky Logan, Talent,"Escort, and Queen's Own. At the stand 'the last timo Kohara- went to the front, hi" nearest attendants being Becky Logan, Escort, and Queen's Own, with 'i'alent racing on the cuteide of tho field. Kohara led into the straight, and was loudly proclaimed the winner, but he failed lo stall off a strong challenge from Beokv Loga?i, who won n:ost decisively. Escort was a •pc-er third. Queen's Own fourth, and Talent fifth. Bcc':y Lcgan paced a fine race. Slh was driven" by F. Holuics, owing to her trainer, F. Holmes, jun.. meeting with ail accident at Ashburton tho previous Saturdnv. This made her sixth win this season, while she has won 2259 sovs in stages. Kohara had every chance, hut was always held saf« by the winner. Escort had to be driven out to beat Queen's Own, who did r.ot- appear to relish the mud: 'leithor did Harold Burwood. Harbour Light broke when extended, a'ld Talent, who is regarded as a good mudlark, raced n long way belou* expectation?.

! Peterwali was favourite in the Peninsul: ' Handicap, and was backed as if the issue wa ; beyond doubt, but what chance he possessec ( of "winning was lost by breaking more thai once, and tho best he could do was ti I finish fourth. Engagement, from scratch i was alwavs well placed. .She stayed out tli; two miles in excellent style, and despiti one mistake won nicely by a couple o lengths, making her third win in the last few months. Proud Ata, a winner on the first day, beat all but the winner. Ever so, lie wa.-" somewhat lucky, as Mangoutu would have beaten him had she not lost so much ground in thfe oarlv stages. Merrv Bingen was prominent, for a mile, but Money Snider and Little Logan both ran badlv and finished in the molt. At the conclusion of tho race the stewards held an enquiry into tho driving of Troud Ata. No action was taken, but J. Dcyell was cautioned for careless driving. The luverca-rgill mentor, A. Mathoaon, provided the first and second horses in tho Railway Handicap, namely, Lenamhor I and Moor Chimes. Both horses were always well placed, and after being under pressure for a furlong Lenamhor scored by a head j from Bis sta.b!emate Moor Chimes. The winner, Lenamhor, is an aged gelding by Botrl Nut from Ninian. He is a good horse on a heavy track, and has won quite a number of races under similar conditions. After going awav well, Bing Boy broke and lost bis position, but in tho next circuit he was amongst the leaders, and going down the back ian into third place. Unfortunately, he met with interference in the straight otherwise he would have finished closer tin tlinn third. Outside the placed horses, Jolly Chimes, Shins Soon, and Four Pells made the best showing, but even so never looked like winners. The day's lacing concluded with the FareI well Handicap, and although thero were only seven starters, tho pool totalled 9030 eov3, and it constituted a- record in the history of tho club. Escort was favourite, and carried a couple of hundred tickets more than Tommy Direct, with Wharepiana and Ivy Audubon also receiving strong support. The race was not as interesting a.s anticipated, as Downcast and Wharepiana both lost ground at the start and Escort mixed Jiia gait in the firet furlong, and in his endeavour to make up his handicap was left without a final effort and finished a long way behind the placed horses. Lady Embrace, from scratch, was induced to Ifavo tho mark by her pilot, R. B. Berry. She made all her own running, and found no difficulty in (withholding a strong challenge from Ivy Audubon, who occupied a similar position behind Peter Bingen in tlia Flying Handicap on the first day. Downcast finished fgat. in third place, after lofting a lot of ground at the start. Then came Ter.eriffe, Wharopiar.a, and Tommy Direct. '
