SATURDAY'S MATCHES

The third round of. tha Canterbury Hotktv Association's competition was played on Saturday. 'Varsity defeated St. Albans bv the odd goal in three, and Seltryn had a similar margin over Sydenham at Lancaster Park. The weather was fine but cloudy and the grounds a. bit heavy. The first round of the ladies' matches was plaved hnt the primary schools' games were held" over The following table shows the positions'or tbe Benior teams:—

St. Albans opened the attack, but Newton returned play to.the St. Albans' circles wlic-c Holland scored first blood lor 'Varsity wltii ?, lu^. y shot - St - Albans retaliated, and * ranklin sent in a hot one that just missed St. Albans kept up the pressure, and Slackie was called on to save successive shots from Brown Drayton. Halu put in an unsupported effort, but play was returned lo the St-. Albans end, where M'arsitv's off<ide play spoiled many chances. Half-time score- ' Varsity 1, St. Albans 0. The second spell opened lively, and the St. Albans 1 goalie was called on to save a couple of hot ones shortly after resuming. SEI.WYN V. SYDENHAM. Sehvyn had the better of the opening exchanges. Good work bj James kept them out o£ the circle. B. Hore put the ball over for Snook to clear with a flying hit. Selwyn were showing marked superiority, and Snook stopped a hot shot from S. Bell. Sticks gave' Sydenham gome relief. Sydenham attacked, and Pragnell had a shot, but was penalised. Bleaches by S. Bell enabled Sydenham to press, but a long hit gave relief. Sydenham pressed, but Selwyn came away. A mix-up in the circle saw Snooks obstruct,, but the penalty corner was cleared. Ward gave relief, and Sydenham were attacking as half-time went, with no score. Selwyn opened the attack in the second spell by a concerted rush into Sydenham's circle. Snooks came out and fielded, but S, Bell secured, and scored. Selwyn 1, Sydenham .0. F. Squire was prominent-.'in-starting a Selwyn attack, which. James intercepted, and Sydenham forced play to the other end. Malioney returned the ball to F. Squire, but Hall hit out at the halfway line. Hall sent a neat, pass to Atkinson, who shot wide.
