UNSKILLED LABOUR.
SYSTEM OF PATRONAGE. / (BT CABLE—TRESS ASSOCIATION —COPTTtIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN K-S* CABLE ASSOCIATION*.) ' SYDNEY, April 30. Under a resolution- forced through the City Council by Labour aldermen it is now necessary to. secure the. nomination of an alderman before any. appointment for unskilled labour can be made in any section of the Council s service. Not only ltet'orin aldermen, but some Labourites, strongly protested against this form of patronage. The Labourite who moved the original motion protested that it had been altered in such a way by the Laboui caucus as to make it absolutely unfair and unjust. It now meant that nominations must be by Labour aldermen as Reform aldermen have no power in regard to nominations. He added thatsome aldermen appeared to have all the pull in. regard to appointments.. ■ The secretary for the Reform Aldermanic Party stated that of o" new appointments made during the - past four months 570 were-the nominees of Labour aldermen.
