GAMING HOUSES.
WELLINGTON POLICE RAIDS. (PHZS3 ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, April 30. As a result of a police raid on premises in Thorndon quay yesterday, Douglas Allan Hogg (twenty-nine) was charged with keeping a common gaming house. Ho pleaded guilty. Tie Chief-Detective quoted bets recorded, including sums of £SB, £ls and £22, and also a treble of £6OO to £l. The police believed accused had been employed by a wealthy bookmaker. The defence was that Hogg drifted into bookmaking, after giving up the hairdressing business, owing to poor health. He was lined £2O. George Levey, tobacconist, Dixon street, was similarly charged, and his wife was charged with assisting him. Both pleaded guilty. Levey was fined £2O, and bis wife £l.
