TASMANIAN AGRICULTURE.

CHRISTCHURCH OFFICER'S APPOINTMENT. (BT CABLB—PBESS ABiOCIATION—COPTRI9HT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z- CABLE ASSOCIATION.) HOBART, April 26. The Premier, Mr J. Lyons, announced that Mr Frank Ernest Ward, of New Zealand, has been appointed Director of Agriculture for Tasmania. Mr Ward is a Tasmanian by birth, and had been in New Zealand for several years. [Mr F. E. Ward, H.D.A., of the New Zealand Department of Agriculture, whosef appointment as Director of Agriculture in Tasmania is announced, is at present, and has been for the past five years, stationed at Christchurch as Instructor in Agriculture, a position which carries with it the supervision of the numerous fields experiments conducted by the Department in Canterbury. Mr Ward is 37 years of age, and is a native of Hobart, Tasmania, where he received his' early education at the Hutchins School—the second oldest school in Australia. Later he attended Hawkesbury College, where he gained the Diploma of Agriculture, and the Burdekin medal, which is associated with the diploma. Prior to leaving the Dominion with the Expeditionary Force during the Great War, Mr Ward was Instructor in Agriculture in the Seddon Memorial Technical College, Auckland. In England, during the war period, he "was in charge of the School of Agriculture established at Torquay, and had a staff of twentyfive instructors under his control. On returning to New Zealand he joined the Department of Agriculture at Wellington, and was in charge of the fields' instruction work in the Wellington districts. Since Mr Ward came to Christchurch, five years ago, tho work of the Fields Division lias grown tremendously, and more particularly there has been a marked development in experimental work, the sqale of which in Canterbury is much greater than in any other district in the Dominion. Mr Ward is well-known amongst the farmers of Canterbury, and has taken a. prominent part in all movements calculated to advance the agricultural and pastoral industries in the province.]
