The eight hour day, under the new name of "Labour Day," was celebrated by a big procession through the city streets followed by sports. A feature was the fine trade display of Australianmade goods. Under a banner inscribed "Ex-Police-men's Union" marked some 200 ex-con-stables, who were discharged from the ranks as a result of the strike a couple of years ago. Leading unionists hope that a solution of the trouble over the 44-hours' week will be reached as a result of Mr Baddeley's mission to other States where he is endeavouring to prevail upon the respective Premiers to adopt the 44-Hours Act. Mr Baddeley, speaking at Melbourne, said that there was no possibility of permanent industrial peace among unionists until this question was definitely settled.
