ADVERTISING ITS CHARMS. QUESTION TO BE RECONSIDERED Some discussion took place at tho City Council meeting last evening on the question of whether a further sum of money should bo expended on advertising the City. Tho By-laws and Finn nee Committee reported as follows:—"A letter has been received from the honorary editor of Citv Beautiful.' asking whother the Council would be goou enough to mako similar arrangements to those made last year for two publications of 'City Beautiful 1 to bo issued during the next twelve months, the Council supplying tho copy and illustrations, and nniking a contribution of £SO towards the expenso of each number. The committee, after giving this matter'careful consideration, cannot sco its way to recommend the Council to comply with tho request." Cr. E. li. Andrews said that if Councillors were of opinion that tho.v should advertise the City, ho thought they should do it in tho way suggested. Ho would like the chairman of tho committee to say whether it was against any further advertising this year. "If not, will it reconsider its decision?'' he asked. Cr. A MrKellnr said that it was felt that tho expenditure of tho iitonev this year was "not justified, and, in addition thero was 110 one to devote the necessary time to the preparation of tho reading matter. Cr. C. Carr supported Cr. Andrews. He s.iid that the publication referred to had Hfeetivelv advertised the City last year, although there were too manv superlatives and tho language was rather grandiloquent. Christchurch should show the world it was on the map, and should not jje outdistanced by Auckland. The Citv should not waste its fragrance on the desert air. The clause was referred back to the committee for further consideration.
