HOUSING.

CITY COUNCIL'S LOAN. "Has all the money made available under the housing loan been taken up by applicants?" asked Cr. C. Carr at the City Council meeting last evening. He also asked whether any of the houses had been built, whether any further applications had been receivod, and had not yet been dealt with, and whether tho Committee proposed to raise a further loan.

Cr. D. G. Sullivan said twenty-one advances had been authorised, and all had boon taken up. About £SOOO had actually been advanced, and some of tho houses were completed. One of the tenants had thanked tho committeo for giving him the opportunity to get into a decent home for the first time in his married life. Only £27 had not been appropriated, and the committee would have to consider tho matter of further borrowing. Enquiries had been made in the Government Departments, but the first replies were unsatisfactory. They would probably not receivo consideration. Recently one of the Departments had offered a sum of money at 6 per cent., with a sinking fund of 1 per cent. This would enable them ,to make the same arrangements as those already in force. Fresh applications which were in hand totalled about 20, and were for an aggregate sum of about £15,000. Possibly the committee would be able to bring down a report at the next meeting. -
