William B. Mayer, 25-year-old accountant in the Chase National Bank (N.Y.), shot and lulled Miss Shirley Mclntyre, also 25, stenographer in the same bank, because she preferred the gay life of Broadway to marriage with a bank elerk. He then shot himself twice in the chest. Letters found in Mayer's pocket said he had decided on his action because "She said I was too inferior to be taken seriously by her," because she had "ostracised" him sincp she had "a taste of a life I could not afford." The death has occurred at Sheffield of Mr Thotnas W. Ward, the founder oa a big scalo of the business of shipbreak* ing in relation to war vessels. He was the first to buy a battleship complete to be broken up.
