"A HOME FROM HOME."

JUSTICES VISIT PAPARUA PRISON. On Saturday afternoon three motorcars conveyed a party representing the Council of the Canterbury Justices' Association on a visit of inspection of the Paparua State Prison. The members of the Association present were; Mr H. Herbert. Smith (president), Mr 'S. E. McCarthy; (hon. solicitor), Mr J. Russell Brunt : (registrar), Mr 'J. A. Caesar (visiting justice), and Messrs A. Williams, C. H. Gilbv, and W. H. Seed (vioe-presidents), ana Messrs ' G. E. Franklin, H. I. Herbert, and A. H. Hobbs (members of the Council). Mr W. J. Jenkins (official visiting justice), and Messrs H. Holland, M.P., : P. £O. Christian, James Anderson, and J. W. Baty (members of the Council), sent apologies. The party were mot at the "entrance to the prison by the superintendent, Mr David Brain, and were escorted over the gardens and plantations. The visitors looked over the estate, about 1500 acres in extent, saw the farm animals, and made a thorough inspection of the prison buildings, the cells, the hospital, the library, the bathhouse, and the cookhouse. . The new building will contain a cinema for the mse of the- "prisoners, and during the winter lectures will be given. ' The superintendent informed the visitors that various games, were such as quoite, draughts, dominoes,' etc M and on Saturday afternoon cricket and football. After the inspection all tho party expressed surprise and satisfaction to find such great improvement in the infitition .and in the estate surrounding it. {The president of the Association declared indeed that the prison was a health resort, »nd the prisoners were lucky in having such. a "home from home."
