"Some people think that it is impossible to be blind and happy at the same time," said Mr H. E. Vaile, chairman of trustees of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, in a speech at Auckland. "That is a completely exploded theory. Some of our inmates are particularly fond of music. Others like reading, and others games. Sorrie, even, are very good judges of a racehorse—at all events, they think they are."

Two excursion trains left Christchurch last evening for Dunedin, one at 11 p.m., aiid the other at 11.15 p.m. Seats for the first train were booked up early in the day, and the Department decided to run a further train of 10 cars. The first comprised 14 filled carriages, but the second, of 10 cars, had two spare carriages for wayside passengers. The bookings are expected to be exceptionally heavy after this, and they will reach the climax on April 30th, when the last train-load will reach the Exhibition Before its close. The censuß sub-enumerators have been busy since the night of the census, collecting tho schedules. This work will probably take all next week to complete, so that householders have nonnecessity to become impatient if their schedules are not 1 collected for two or three days. It is not only the area that the sub-enumerators have to ctrver that makes the collection of the schedules a work of .some time, but delays are caused by heads of households having neglected to fill in the papers, and the sub-enumerators being called upon to assist.

< With the growth of the city of Auckland, the Minister for Health (the Hon. J. A. Young) recognises that tho time is fast approaching when it will be very desirable to remove the mental hospital at Avondale to the country, where the institution could be enlarged to provide accommodation for voluntary patients who wished to undergo treatment to oheck incipient mental trouble (says a Press Association mee-. sage). In this connexion the Minister recently inspected a suggested site near Patumahoe, and he states that the Department has under offer quite a number of sites. The whole matter so far was reoeiving consideration only, no definite decisions having been made. As a rule one expects to find a foundation stone close to mother earth., and thus surprise was. expressed by some persons at a ceremony held Ut Takapuna when they discovered that the foundation stone of the new Grammar School was perched on the summit of a brick column, about 15ft in the air, this, by the way, being the level of the first floor of tho proposed building (says tho Auckland "Star"). "What's the chimney for?" enquired an elderly lady who arrived early on the scene, and on being informed that the foundation stone was at the top 1 she appeared more puzzled than ever. "It looks rather like the top of a chimney," said Professor Thomas, chairman of the Board of Governors, during his address, and he hastened to add: "But it will be all right when it is completed." J.
