MAYFIELD ITEMS.
A"'very pleasant social evening was held in the Presbyterian Church, .the occasion being the making of a presentation to Miss Johnston, who is to be married shortly. The Rev. A. D. Kirkland, on behalf of the congregation, presented Miss Johnston with a handsome silver tea service.' In doing so, he eulogised the work done by Miss Johnston as a teacher in the Sunday School and. also as organist in the church-, 1 Sh© Tpould b© very much missed by the congregation and Sunday School pupils, but they all joined, in wishing her, every happiness in her new sphere.' Messrs 0. Sewell, H. C. Barton, D. Edmonds, and A. V. Barrett also spoke of Miss Johnston's sterling qualities. . Miss Johnston briefly responded, her father-, the ltevv J. Johnston, replying more fully on her behalf. During the evening items were rendered by the following:—Mrs McMillian, pianoforte solo; Mrs 11. McDowell, Rev. Johnston, Miss JO. Fleming, Miss Anderson, songs; Rev. J. Johnston, recitation. The presentation of.the Johnston cup for competition between the Ruapuna arid Mayfield Tennis Clubs took, place at a dance held in Ruapuna. The Mayfield captain (Mr T. F. Sewell) in presenting it to the Ruapuna captain (Mr E Johnston) congratulated Ruapuna on their win and referred to the very interesting match just completed. Mr Johnston briefly responded. The trophies presented by the president of the RuapUna Club (Mr J. Moore) for the handicap singles were also presented. Miss Eden winning the Indies' (a writing compendium) and Mr T. Moore the men's (an eversharp pencil). Dancing was kept up to, an early hour to music supplied by Mr Beckley and Mr W. Cormick.
