+ PERSONAL. 'SPECIAL to "102 TT.tSS. ) GREYMOUTH, April 23. The engagement is announced of Ruby, second daughter o£ Mr and Mrs R. Johnston, Mount Eden, Auckland, to Krnest Ashley, elder son of Mr and Mrs K. "W'arnes, Greymouth. 'Mrs E. A. Wickes and Miss Daisy Wickes, who have been touring England and the Continent for twelve months, have returned to Christchureli, and will arrive at Greymouth early next month. Miss Constance Moricc (Wellington) is the guest of Mrs T. E. Y. Seddon (Greymouth). Sir Henry Banvell, now Commonwealth senator, and formerly Premier of South Australia, will arrive in Greymouth by to-morrow's express. He will proceed to Ilokitika, and will spend •Sunday sightseeing. On Monday morning he will tome on to Greymouth, and will spend the day here, going to Reefton by the afternoon train. Mr N. Guthrie, who for some years past has been farming at Waitahu, left yesterday for Christchureli, en route for \\ nnganui, where he has secured a position a3 engineer at a freezing works. Before Ipaving he was entertained at Waitahu by neighbouring farmers and friends. Sawmill Accident. Arthur i'incli, a single man, met with a serious accident this morning when working at Malfroy and Co.'s sawmill, at Three Mile. Finch was on a truck, taking rails into the bush, when he noticed the chain slipping, and, foreseeing an accident; he jumped, but slipped on the rail, the passing over his left leg, inflicting sMious injuries. He was taken to the Westland Hospital, ft is feared tha.t the leg will have to be amputated. The Weather. There was a welcome change in the weather this morning, when clouds gave way to sunshine and warm &unny conditions prevailed during the day. Grey Harbour Board. The work of conveying rock from the Cobdeu quarry for repairs to the south tip will bo commenced next weelc. The Grey-Runanga railway bridgo over the Grey river will be used for haulage operations, and a route will be taken through a portion of the railway yards before connecting with the Harbour Board's railway. ,The. w.boden staging at the breakwater will be lifted and replaced with quarry rock. This work will be done by the 1 '- new twenty-ton crane, for whieh tenders close on June 30th. Meanwhile, repair work to the line to the north tiphead is being' proceeded with, preparatory to the preliminary work in connexion ; ; -with ; the Board 'a proposed harbour improvements scheme. L • ' . Beefton Jockey . Club. At a committee meeting of the Reefton Jockey Club, the'financial''statement of the recent Autumn-Meeting, was.submitted, which showed a loss of £9 Is 9d. Mr J. B. Auld was -appointed treasurer, vice Mr A.Perotti. The Inangahua Trotting Club was given permission* to lay water on to the trotting track, subject, to a, conference with the Ground Committee of the Jockey Club ais to the best place for connecting same. Road Construction Vote. The Minister'for Public Works has advised the Grey, County Council that the balanec of the vote appearing on the 1923-26 Estimates in connexion with the construction of the main roads from Greymouth to Rotomanu (Lady Lake to Bell Hill section) will be issued to the Council at once. The Council, has two contracts" in hand at the present time, and a third contract -will be let imme-diately-the authority comes to hand." •This road will give access to the Roto'nianu, Poeru'a,, and Inchbonnie Settlements. • Moana Railway Station. Plans for a new railway station at Moana to replace the structure recently destroyed by fire, are in course of preparation, and .when completed the erection of the new building will be put in hand'immediately. , Angora Goats. A consignment of 17 Angpra goats will arrive in Greymouth to-morrow by the s.s. Kaitoa. The animals have been purchased by Mr W. O'Reilly, farmer, of Upper Kokatahi,, to assist in eradicating the blackberry pest on some of his land.. Excursion to Dunadin. A contingent of school children, compiling 60 from Westport, 24 from Cobden and Blackball, and 33 from Hokitika, .will leave to-morrow on a visit to the Dunedin Exhibition, and will return to the West Coast on the following Saturday. Competitions Society. > At a meeting of the West Coast Competitions Society this evening, it was decided to appoint Mr Temple White, of Wellington, 1 musical judge ' for this year's Corfipetitions.; The appointments of judges for elocution and oratory were held over pending further enquiries. Messrs W. B. Gilbert,. R. T. Bush, and A. A. Adam 9 were appointed a committee to revise the syllabus. It was decided to hold a series of entertainments with a view to assisting the Society's funds. Tunnel Traffic. •' Goods traffic from the Westland section through the Otira tunnel for the week ending to-morrow is approximately 7990 tons, -n . Missing Bushman.
