NEW ZEALAND INDUSTRIES.
TO THB IDITOB Of "THB WXBS." Sir,—tour leading article with regard tri'the demand of the local Industrial Association for still higher Customs duties upon manufactured goods expresses what a great many • people are thinking.' ' The demand means, in! a nutshell, that the public is to be required to jay more to compensate for the indifferent methods ot local manufacturers. These hare long enough filled the air with their lamentation, and it is time that they were told that since they import the latest machinery and skilled workers, it is evident that.the weakness is in them--861 VPS No concern can be better than the men at the head of it, and it appears to me that the heads of some of our industrial concerns should be replaced by men such as successfully manage the opposition factories'elsewhere. Very angry .comments by the.trade appeared in your columns a short time ago with reference to what I thought were .the quite friendly remarks of a Home boot'manufacturer, who was Visiting the Doniinion. Some'of the heads would., however, do better to consider whether their own retirement from their factories' might not bring about the result that'they desire. The public are saying so, anyhow, in' the only way' open' to : them; i.«., ; by not buying their goods.—Ybnrs, etc., • " •V IX?OK FIRST WITHIN.
