Empire Day will be celebrated on Thursday, June 3rd, "in conjunction with the anniversary of the birthday of the King, and will be observed as a public holiday in the Government offices throughout the Dominion.—Wellington correspondent. Yesterday afternoon Detective N. Bayli3 arrested a man named Leslie James Odgers, of Taihape, on a charge of theft. Odgers will appear at tho Magistrate's •Court tSeis morning. Darton, of Lawrence, Otago, at Lake Lyndon, Mr Young states that the hills in that district are extraordinarily rich in mountain daisies. Species of veronicas also were collected. Mr Young intends to visit Lake Lyndon again soon, to collect more plants for the native section of the Gardens. A suggestion by Dr. Bobertson, of Tapanui, Otago, that country medical officers should take turns in exchanging with the resident medical officer of the Otago Hospital Board, and in this way introduce a system of regular courses, has been approved by the Otago Board's Hospital Committee. Tho matter will come before the Board!at its next meeting, and if the recommendation proves acceptable the exchange will operate during the University Vacation each year, and will be open to any country medical officer who may wish to take advantage of the opportunity offered. There is a good deal of unemployment In Invercargill at present. A Labour agent stated this week that in his opinion the position was largely due to the fact that many men in search of work were unwilling to go out of town to obtain it, and that the greater part of the work obtainable in town was only of a casual nature. The result was that these men were constantly being thrown on the labour market. There was often more enquiry for men in the country than could be obtained because there were not very many prepared to go to places that were not within easy access of a town.
