ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Colonci Dawson, Assistant Medical Officer of Health for Canterbury, visited Ashburton yesterday. Taney Fair Carnival. The popularity of Dixieland, which is promoted in the interest of thefancy fair and carnival to be conducted by the Ashburton Boxing Asßociation, Defence and Miniature Riflo Clubs, was again in evidence on Wednesday evening, when the attendance exceeded all expectations and the sale of tickets had to bo stopped to avoid overcrowding. The feature of the evening, in addition to the dancing and sideshows, was further matches staged in connexion with the tug-of-war. In the light-weight class, Winchmore beat Eiffelton after a strenuous pull, and Allenton put Smallbone Bros, out of the contest, winning comfortably. Eiffelton held the advantage throughout, in their struggle with Rakaia in the heavyweight class, and won easily. Owing to the withdrawal of Methven, a trial pull was held between Brickyard and the Boxing Association, the former winning by a narrow margin after an -even struggle. To complete the competitions, there will bo four pulls each Wednesday for the next four weeks. Glass Works. The work of clearing tree stumps on the site of the Southern Cross Glass Company's works in the vicinity of the cemetery h'a3 just about been ■ completed, and yesterday a start was made with the laying of the foundation for the buildings, by the contractor. Magistrate's Court. The list of business to be dealt with at the Ashburton. Magistrate's Court this morning includes three ' charges against a local resident of selling liquor within the no-license district of Ashburton, one against another resident, of allowing cattle to wander, and another against a resident of Fairfield for obstructing a railway employee in the performance of his duty. In addition', there is a defended and several undefended civil cases. Methodist Circuit. The Rev.' R. B. Tinslcy presided over the quarterly meeting of the Ashburton Methodist Circuit, which was held in the Baring square schoolroom. A motion of sympathy was carried for Mr G. f, Andrews in his recent bereavement. On behalf of the Circuit, Messrs Frampton and Graham extended a hearty welcome to Mr Tinslcy. An appeal was received from the President of the Conference (Rev.. P. ,N. Knight), and the secretary (Rev. A. N. Scotter) for assistance in connexion with the Toung People's Department of the Church. It was decided that a suitable Sunday in June be set apart as the Young People's Day throughout the . Circuit, and that an appeal, by medium of envelopes, be made for financial assistance. Mr H. Money was re-appointed local secretary of the Young People's Department.

Hospital Record. The number of patients occupying beda in the • Ashburton County Hospital yesterday, was 83,' which constituted a record for that institution. Ladles' Oolf. There was a good attendance of members of the Ashburton Ladies' Golf Club on the • links yesterday, when' a foursome flag match for a prize presented by Miss Z. B. Bonnington, was played, and was won by Mesdamcs G. J. S. Fisher and S. J; Thomas. RAKAIA. On Anzao Day commemorative services will be held in all the churches of the district. In the evening a combined service will be held in the Town Hall, llakaia, the speakers being the llevs. J. C. Hawkstvorth and A. S. Morrison, and Mr W. J. Henderson. Poppy Day will be held to-day., Poppies will be sold in the Btreets, and at the various business places. The secretary of the Kakaia Football Club has. been.notified by the Ashburton .Sub-Union that all matches arranged for Saturday have, been postponed until May Ist. The first of a series of card parties in aid of the funds of the llakaia Football Club was held in the Library on Wednesday evening. There was a large attendance. The ladies'' prize was won by Mrs G. Haslett, and the gentlemen's by Mr George Wells. A meeting of St. Andrew's Ladies' Guild was held in the Schoolroom, on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs R. Oakley presiding. A balance-sheet in connexion with the recent bazaar showed that the net results were £95 3s od, with a few small amounts to come in. The amounts realised at the various stalls were:—Refreshments, £lB 13s; produce, £l3 8s 3d; work, £24 15s 6d; Rokeby stall, £ll 13s Id; flower stall, £8 lis 2d; sweet stall, £9 7s 6d; sheep guessing, £5; book stall, £2 12s 4d; side shows. £1 13s; busv bee stall, £5 2s Id; making a total of £IOO 15s lid. METHVEN. At a meeting of the committee of the Methven Gun Club, Mr A. Orchard presided, and there were also present, Messrs T. S. Harrison, G. J. Heney, S. Anderson, G. A. Franks, W. J. Cooksley, L. Anderson, and H. Green. Messrs W. Lorrimer, jun., and H. Drummond were elected members of the club. The chairman reported that the new storeroom and secretary's office erectc4 on the grounds had now been completed satisfactorily. It was decided to effect at insurance cover on the building. The president, treasurer, and captain were appointed trustees of the. Club's property. The report of the sub-commit-tee appointed to draw up a programme for the current season was read and .adopted. The question of allotting Mr W. Fairclough's silver cup was discussed, and it was decided: "That the competitor having the best aggregate in 'the Cup shoots, at the end of the season, provided he does not win the Club's Cup, be declared the winner." No further arrangements were made regarding the medal given by Mr H. A. Nickolls. It was decided to enter a team to compete in the C.A.C. Shield Competition, and that the Ellesmere Clnb be written to, asking them to accept a challenge for May 15th. The captain'and handicapper were appointed ,a selection -committee. Accounts amounting to £24 16s" 5d were passed for payment.

MOUNT SOMERS.

On Sunday the newly-appointed vicar, Rev. Dyer, preached to crowded congregations at the different centres of the parish. Evening service in Mount Somers was well attended, and electric light was in use for the first time. The vestry are much indebted to tho Rev. F. A. Tooley, of Methven, for making frequent visits during the long vacancy. A committee of ladies with • Mrs Comyns as chairwoman, has been 6et np to sell poppies to-day. Last year's effort was exceptionally successful. All householders and parents are being circularised in order to obtain a large meeting at the householders' meeting on Monday. Important business will bo done, including the question of a school jubilee. The weather has been very mildj the temperature not_ falling below 47 for over a week. Nor'-westery conditions prevail with occasional autumnal calm periods.
