TURF GOSSIP. Nominations for the Ambcrlcy Racing Club's Annual Meeting close today. Acceptances for the South Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting close at 8 p.m. to-day. Acceptances for the Waikato, Haivke's Bay, and Nelson Autumn Meetings close on April 27th. To-morrow tho Railway Department are running two special passenger trains from Christchurch for the Trotting Races at Ashburton. Particulars of train times are advertised in this issue. Hoy Reed continued his run of successes at tho Manawatu Meeting and is riding in great form. , Northern writers have recently criticised Keeu s riding in woigbt-for-age races and have asserted that lack of judgment on his part over a long distance has brought about narrow defeats. Reed has, however, replied to these critics in a practical form by exhibiting splendid horsemanship in his victories in the Trentham and Awapuni Gold Cups.

By his further success on Wedncs-. clay, Jlapino must be considered the best class horse over a distance at present in commission in New Zealand. His trainer, J. H. Jefferd, and pilot, ]{. Heed, expressed the opinion in Wellington that the Martian gelding was back to the form which enabled him to gain high-class honours at Randwick Iwo seasons ago. If ho had been taken over there for tho Autumn Meetings this year, he would have been very troublesome to Windbag, Heroic, and company. T.n addition to Dobbin winning at Awapuni on Wednesday, Quin Abbey was represented by another first placegetter in Edon Hall, who was an acceptor for tho Tinakori Handicap on tho first day of the Wellington Meeting, but was nob started. Eden Hall is owned and trained by the Taranaki mentor, 11. Brough. Tho victory of Limerick over Lysander and Commendation in tho Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes on Wednesday was well received in Christchurch. Tho opinion of bis admirers has always been that ho would prove the superior of his two rivals over a distance, and Mr Knight's gelding can now bo deemed to be the most promising candidate for Derby honours next year at present racing in New Zealand. All going well with Limerick, F. J>. Jones will be leaving for Australia in time to contest th« Australian Jockey Club Derby, and in all probability will have other horses under his charge for the trip." J. Pine i« handling at Riccarton a yearling by Paper Money from Marta. On looks tb» youngster does' not by any means attfftot the eye, but on breeding lines should be able to gallop, as Martia is tho dam of that good mare Enthusiasm and of Joculator,, at present at the stud in the North Island. Two colts and a filly have recently nrrn-cd at Ohokepore Lodge from Stonyhurst to be handled by H. and A. Cutts. They are Faraway by Panmure from Brambletye. Sky Quest by Autumnus from Fairhaven,..and an uninamed Ally by Autumnus from .Telescope, sister to Retrospect and Siehtseer. r a G. Murray.Aynaloy has again taken Up btarmist and Goldstep. and both are carrying plenty of condition. Prior to. the recent Wellington Meeting, C, Emerson *as leading B. Beed on tho list Of. winning jockeys for this season, by 4} successes. As a result of the Wellington and Manawatu Meetings, Beed has supplanted Emerson, and is now at the top of the list with 62 wins against Emerson's 50*. Emerson was not tiding at either of these meetings, but will have several mounts at the South Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn fixture'next week. The two-year-old colt Lysander has completed his campaign for the present season, and his owner, Mr G M. Currie states that all going well with him he will make hli first appearance next season in tho Wajiganui Guineas, with the Avondalo and Great Northern Guinea* to follow. Motley and Anklet, two mares that have been racing in Mr Currie's colours, are to be retired to the stud.

Commendation'r defeat in the Manawatu '» Slre» Ptodnce Stake* has not caused nl« owner, Mr W. H. Gaisford, to make any alteration* in his plana for that two-year'-old'a campaign. He will not race again this aeaaon, but provided Jie trains on satisfactorily, next season he will be sent across to Sydney for the A.J.O. Derby.

Comedy Prince, winner of the Kairanga Hurdles at Awapuni yesterday, is a half brother by the Melbourne Gup winner Comedy King to Vice Admiral, who won the New Zealand Oup. He it an erratic custpmer, but when in the humour can show plenty of pace, and this season he. has four hurdle races to his credit.

Mr W. McA. Duncan, o.wner of the brilliant sprinter Tamatete, who has shown such good form on the Awapuni course this season, gave the Manawatu Racing Club a handsome gold cup which was attached to "the principal handicap at the Club's Autumn Meeting yesterday, the event being named the Tamatete Oup Handicap. The race brought out a good field, and though DeSage, notwithstanding her win on the rst day, was comparatively neglected by backers, her victory was very, well received. After the race Mr Chae. Louisson, president of the' club, congratulated Mr E. Simpson on his mare's success, and the cup was then presented to Degage's owner by Mrs Duncan.

The riding honours at Awapuni yesterday were shared by E. J. Mackie and J. Barry, who each rode two winners. P. Powler, B. H. Morris, B. Seed, add S. Wilson each rodo one winner.

Tea Tray'a stock have been showing to considerable advantage this season, and Kiosk placed an important victory to that lire's credit when ho won tho Manawatu Stakes yesterday. Kiosk, who had shown good form at Wellington last weok, showed a flho turn of speed in yesterday's race, and his time of 1.13 2-5 has only once been beaten in the history of the race. The Hawk ran the six furlongs in 1.13 in 1921, and in 1923 Thespian took the same timo as Kiosk did.

Merry Jest, winnor of the Borough Handicap, boasts English breeding on both sides of her pedigree. Her sire is that successful stallion Absurd, and her dam, Yes, was also bred in England, and is by Valens from Aye Aye by Flying Lemur. There were two double winners at the\Manawatu Eacing Club's Autumn Meeting, Degage, who won the Prince of Wales Handicap and tho Tamatete Cup Handicap, and Phantasy, who won the Tematai Handicap and Adderstone Handicap. In both her races Phantasy had Kilmiss in second place behind her, and it is interesting to noto that both Phantasy ana Kilmiss are by Kilboy.

<?. Eastwood, who had a bad fall from Crown Reel in tho Addewtone Hack Handicap at Awapuni yesterday, has been very unlucky this season. He had only recently resumed riding after a ■erions accident at Blenheim, in •Which he had both collarbones broken. He had-another fall at Trentham last jr««k, though without serious results.

RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.

The weather conditions were favourable for training operations at Biccarton, this morning, and some useful work was done, mostly by horses engaged at the South Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting next week. Lady Clarenceux shaped well over flvo furlongs traversed in 1.5. I'ootfall got to the end of a mile in 1.45, while His Majesty and Blue Hall took 1.53 for the same journey. Sun Up was restricted to a four furlong gallop in 4!) 4-3. Calcitc and Murihaupo finished together after leaving haif a mile behind in 50 2-u. The West Coasters, Prince Ferouz, All Gold, Tentcrfleld, Cashman, North Inch, and Rapid Rose, were ou the track, and executed useful work. j Tarleton strode out well over seven | furlongs iu 1.32 2-~>, and Fresco, assisted by Oriflamb, gave a pleasing exhibition over the same distance in 1.34 30. Carnot galloped four furlongs in 49 3-5, a feat that was repeated later by Brightling and Assurance. 'Tho HaTp gave a pleasing exhibition over five furlongs, covered in 1.3. Gay Queen and Kilris were companions in a five furlong gallop, accomplished iu 1.5, and others to do serviceable work were Zarisee, Deucalion, Bonatic, Sprinkler, King Abbey, Money Order, Glen Almond, Rebuke, Rapier, Oorinthic, Receipt, Los Ambus, and Tan Glen. TROTTING NOTES. Acceptances for tho Forbury Park T.C.'s "Whiter Meeting close to-day at o p.m. Nominations for two events at the Amberley J.GVs Annual Meeting close to-day at 8 p.m. Excellent weather prevailed yesterday for training operations at Aldington, tho course was in good order, but few trainers took tho opportunity of fully extending their horses. Asturio (harness) was always going better than Direct Tod *(saddle) iii a work-out over a mile- and a qunrter, D. Withers drove Bingen Lad ten furlongs and the Nelson Bingen gelding registered good time, Zellca trotted evenly over two rniles us also did the Nelson Bingen gelding, Nelson Bell. • , With an advantage of 50 yards, Wairua led Harold Btirwood over two miles. Both horses pleased the critics. F. Holmes, jun., drove Becky Logan a solid mile and a half, and St. Maura a mile. Both horses did their work satisfactorily. The trotters, Littlo Johnnie (E. C. McDermott) and Nourmahal (J. Spillano) were companions in a work-out over a coupfe of circuits, the last-nam-ed showing to mo9i advantage. Elusive worked over a journey and showed, a useful turn of speed in patches'. E. 0. McDermott gave Audalion gome education at the barrier and then covered a mile ancT a half with the daughter of Great Audubon, which she did satisfactorily. Native Queen worked a mile in saddle. She showed a useful turn of speed, in the early stage, but tired badly at the finish. W. J. Tomkinson had Minton Derby, Happy Rosa, Jingal, and Lady Alva on the track, and gave the four steady work over a journey. Nelson Ata "trotted evenly over a couple of circuits. Tho Nelson Bingen gelding did not pull nearly as 4 much as he usually docs, and is evidently on the improve in this direction. Bessie Logan was allotted strong work in hopples and pulled up "well. The American-bred trotter, Brigand, was only jogged. He is looking welli and appears to be sound. Black Admiral lift* been turned out for a spell and win not raco again Until next season. During the past nine months, the Brent Locanda gelding lias raced consistently, and from four firsts, three seconds, a third, and a fourth he has won 2070 sovs in stakes. Lady Irving has boen retired from the race track, having proved in foal to the American sire, Drustis. 0. Donald has secured a lease of Mangoutu And the daughter of Galindo and Esp&fita has joined his string at Addington. Mr G. W. Deyell has cancelled his lease of Rosie Nut, And tho mare will face in the interests of her owner, Mr H. Hancock, at Ashburton, to-morrow. WAIPAPAKAURI R.C. FIRST TOTALISATOft MEETING. NOTES ON THE RACING. (speout. to "thb rsuss.") PALMERSTON NORTH, A£ril 22. Koauau was aiado a good favourite for the Kairanga Hurdles, but though he ahaped well, he met more than his match in Comedy Prince, who had run second to Dubious the previous day. Slump, Matu, Eonmari, and Comedy Prince mado the early xunnin*. but racing to the far turn Master PoUr took oharge, with Comedy Prince in hot pursuit, lho latter was in tho lead four furlongs from home, and thowed the. way into the straight, where Eonmark was hii nearest attendant. Comedy Prince held his advantage in tho run Lome and won decisively from Koauau, who finished fast and cut Eonmark out of ,econd place. Bottana who was second favourite, finished fourth! but did not at any ot&ge look like a winner. Master Peter's effort in the middle stage Of tho race was *hort lived. Calorina was *he only scratching* for the Lookwood Hack Handicap, in which Qnllltire, Eden Hall, Vivo, and Great Day were muoh better backed than any of the others. Bonideer as tteual began vory quiokly, and on this occasion managed to stay out the journoy, though she had very little to spare from Dobbin, who did not appear on the scene until the straight was reached. Quillfire looked to have a chance when they turned into the straight, but he failed to run on. Great Day was always with the front division, but Minstrel Boy, with a late run, beat him for third place. Quillfire, Salamia, and Vivo finished close up behind the placed division, The race for the Tamatete Cup, presented by that good eportsman, Mr W. McA. Dunoan, brought out a field of thirteen, Grand Knight being the only one withdrawn. Hipo and Tresham were backed very confidently, and Piuthair and Ngata also received solid support. Hipo, Mask, Glenrosa, Degage, and Zaragoxa were in front as they ran past the stand, but turning out of the straight Zaragoza took oharge and led from Hipo and Glenroea. Going along the back, Zaragota was still in front, while Tresham, De Luxe, and Degage improved their positions. Zaragoza held command as they came into the straight, but the last bit found her out, and Degage finishing as strongly m she had done the previous day won a good race by a length from Hipo, who was less *han a length in front of Tresham. Imperial Spark was close up fourth, and then came Zaragoza and Piuthair. Considering her form the first day Degage paid a remarkably good price. Zaragoia, though not suited by the hard going, ran a great race. The Stonyhurst Handicap brought out all the sixteen acceptors, Euphonium end Polyphemus being almost cvonly backed as first and second favourites, with Royal Diadem and Star Area also evenly hacked next in order, [isgovern and Royal Diadem were left at the start, and Road Hog, Polyphemus, and Willow Wai wsre- quickest to show out. Euphonium began well, but soon loet his place. At the end of three furlongs Beaumont joined Polyphemus in the lead, but 'the latter was well clear when they turned into the straight. Star Area came with a great finish, and Polyphemus jus*- stayed on to win by a neck. Euphonium wa» also running on well »t the finish and was only a length behind Star Area; then in close order came Tiega, Road Hog, Crossfire, and Clandhu. ' . Inferno, Rational, and Aropeta were withdrawn from the Twenty-Second Manawatu Stakes, and tho bracketed pair Motley and Deluge, wero very solidly backed, carrying about twice as much mons? as Limerick and Seatown, who were very evenly buj>ported. Limited was quickest to jump out, with Tukia, Deluge, Kiosk, and Peneua next. At the far turn Limited was two lengths in front of Tukia, after whom Deluge, Pencus, and Seatown. Limited wa« first into the straight, but in the run home, Kiosk drew out to win by. Wtfc length *»« Tukia. With Seatown, who finished well, anoTher half tang* »»<*. * nd ? Civility began quickly, but before going very far gave way to Standard, who was closely followed by Merry Jest. Standard was beaten when the straight was reached, and Merrv Jest took charge, but Civility then put in her claim, and Merry Jest, ridden right out, just managed to win by the barest of margins. Standard was two lengths away third, with Killocra fourth, and Archeen and Inferno next. Merry Jest, who in by Absurd from Yes, showed all tho pace that characterises her sire's progeny, and Civility put up a fine performance in eiving her 221 h and running her so close. On the strength of her first day's form, Kilmifs was i>ent out favourite for the Adderitote Handicap, with Phantasy and Brigadier

Bill next in request. Brigadier Bill »et a very sound pace from the start, and led »he field right into the straight. There Thantasv came through, and in a good finish again defeated Kilmies, with Anklet close up third, and Rang! Sarto, Asleep, and Closefire, iu close order. ENGLISH RACING. EPSOM SPRING MEETING.
