', Edward Francis Nicholls and Joseph [ Nicholls were charged with stealing & suitcase, valued at ±'2o, from the Christehureh • Railway Station ou Tuesday night. I James E. When asked if he could identity the man, he said lie whs almost sure that the person was Edward Nicholls. 1 After hearing further evidence, the Magis- | Irate dismissed the case against Joseph • Nicholls. , Edward P. Nicholls staled that he had been at the station on Tuesday night, but he had no recollection of any suit-case. The reason ho was at tho station was that he | wanted to catch a train to Lyttelton, where he worked. "You have nine previous convictions ! against jou,'' said the Magistrate. "Evidently everything hr.s been done to reform you, therefore the only thing to do is to send you to gaol." Accused was sentenced to one year's imprisonment. i George Henry Conquest was charged with deserting from" the s.s. Athenie and with stealing a blanket, valued at t)os, the property of Jessie Ramsay. On the first charge he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within the next twelve months if called upon. On the second charge he was convicted and admitted to probation for a term of twelve months. MAINTENANCE MATTERS. Adjudged the father of an illegitimate child, Thomas Shadbolt (Mr J. B. Batchelor) was ordered to pay 12s 6d a week towards its maintenance. Mr J. K. Moloney appeared for the mother. Thoebe Smither (Mr S. E. McCarthy) proceeded against her husband, Albert Edward Smither (Mr R. Tnyneham) for maintenance for herself and children. The defendant was ordered to pay 30s a week towards the maintenance of the children. The other information was dismissed. Ethel Violet O'Connell (Mr J. R. Cuningham) proceeded against her husband, Frank Alfred Anton O'Connell (Mr W. V. Tracy), for maintenance for herself and her children. Orders were made for £1 a week maintenance for the- complainant, and los a week for each child.
