THE WAIMAKARIRI.
TO TEE EDITOX Or "THE PRESS."
Sir,—The opponents -of the • Waimakariri scheme, are mentally far away by'this time, dredging the Italian Po, to find a Mussolini, saviour, or "expert" who will, by the use of some foreign magic, turn away the threatened flood waters from our 'SWii-in-a-hole City. We saw our New Zealand engineers' triumph ,in the completion of the Arthur's Pass Tunnel, aud coming nearer home, we were told gratis, a score of times, by our Christchurch "experts," just what to do with our smoky old Lyttelton Tunnel, but such advice was too common and local, hence the more expensive- document from "overseas." It may yot bo proved that the true "experts" are our own river engineers and their staffs. Anyhow, this scheme to give our mad river a straight run to tho sea, to convert it into another Waitaki, so far as its mouth is concerned, has tho approval of our eminent geologist, Professor Speight, and may yet prove a, bold, original master-stroke, that leads to finality and victory,—Yours, etc., r, J. • ALLEY. Upper Kiccarton, April 18th.
