NORTH CANTERBURY.

CULVERDEN. The Cheviot Amateur Dramatic Society presented a very amusing threeact'comedy in tiio Culverden Hall on Saturday evening. The hall was packed and the general ' opinion of the audience was that it was the best amateur performance they had seen lor some time. The door takings amounted to close on £2O, the profits of which will be donated to the Hurunui bubUnion Football funds. A dance lolowed the entertainment, and altogether a happy evening was spent. The local school children lelt on Saturday for a week at the Exhibition. The children of Hanmer Springs ami Waiau joined up with the local children here and mado up a party of 4U children and four teachers. The local football club sent a team to Hanmer Springs on Saturday arid plaved a practice game, winning by eleven points to six. The members of the club aro hoping for some rain before the competitions start as the ground is very hard. A return matcli will bo played with Hanmer Springs at Culverden nest Saturday. At the bi-morjthlv meeting of the Culverden branch of the Plunket Society, Mrs H". G Martin occupied the chair. It was decided to alter the financial year to end on March 31st to coincide with other branches. AMBERLEY. The Woodend football team journeyed to Amberlcy on Saturday, where a friendly match was played against Amberlcy, the latter winning by 6 points to .1 For the winners L. Rhodes kicked a penalty goal and L. Croft scored a try; A. MaeDonald scored a try for Woodend, which was converted by Solomon. The Amberlcy Golf Club played a bogey handicap on Saturday, the winner being Mr J. A. Mayo. The best cards were:—J. A. Mayo all square. C. W. Browne 2 down, L. Modes 2 down, G. Fulton 3 down, H. J. James 3 down, C. Bowen 4 down. ; LOBURN. A meeting of the Loburn Collie Club was held in, tho Coronation Hall on Sal:.. Jay evening, Mr G. Croft presiding over a <rood attendance. This meeting was held with the object of making final arrangements for the trials which are to take place on tho 13th, and 14th of May. A challenge cup for Class I, is to be presented by Mr J. D. McCrackeu (Haylands). Wluterock is presenting one for Class 11. TJhe sheep for the trials are being lent by Mr D. R. Hutchinson. Tho football practice on Saturday was turned into a friendly game, by the arrival of the Sefton team with Mr C. Fitzpatri'ck as referee. Tho annual harvest thanskgiving services were held in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday. The church was beautifully decorated with flowers and fruit, which were afterwards sent to the Presbyterian Orphanages. The Rev. Mr Hutchison took tho service and "Miss Maud Barker presided at tho organ. FERNSIDE. A football team from the Rangiora Convent played tho Fcrnside school team at Femside on Friday afternoon. Tlio boys played a vory good and fast game —there was no score. Mr D. Milne was referee. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames G. Milne, J. G, Milne, C. H. Hinton, Miss, Bell, and the senior girls. The ■ captains of both teams delivered short speeches, and thanked the ladies for tho refreshments. TEMPLETON. On Sunday evening a combined memorial service in connexion with tho late Mrs J. Mann and tho late Mr J. V. Chatterton, was held in the Methodist Church. Tho service was very largely attended, many old members of the con-, gregation travelling long distances to be present. The preacher was tho Eev. J. Parker, minister of tho circuit. During tho offertory, Miss Doris Musgrove sang "Crossing the Bar." Mrs Hill officiated at the organ. The Library Committee commenced a six-night aggregate euchre tournament, in aid of the library funds, last week. The attendance was good. Mlbs Jean Ellen carried off the ladies' prize (an aluminium teapot),'while the men's prize (a handsome bedroom clock) went to'Mr D. Mackie. A Eugby Loague team has been formed in Templeton once-more, and is receiving strong support.. The first match was set down to be played at Templeton, agflinst Addiington, but the Addingtou team defaulted. The local branch of the W.C.T.U. is providing afternoon tea-at all matches played in the Domain. > SHEFFIELD. The Sheffield Hall was packed to its utmost on Thursday evening, when the Football Club held its annual ball. People were present from all parts of the district. Excellent music was supplied by Hector Macdonald's Band from Rakaia, and extras were played by Miss Townsden. Mr Curran acted as M.C. TAI TAPU. The football season in Tai Tapu commenced on Saturday, when the Waihora Junior team played a match against Lincoln College Juniors. After a;i interesting game Waihora won by 15 points to 3. Mr C. Miller was reforce. At 3 p.m. the senior teams, Waihora and Lincoln College met, and the game resulted in a win for the former by 24 .points to 6. Mr Lester. Harris was referee. At the conclusion of the games the players were enter- j tained at afternoon tea by lady friends | of the club. The games were played on Rhodes Park. Tho school children who were accompanied by Mr Maginness and Mrs Suckling, returned from their visit to the Dunedin Exhibition by train on Friday evening. A most successful concert in aid of the Presbyterian Church was held, in the Town Hall on Saturday evening. Mr James Macartney was chairman, and every item was much appreciated. 'Chev programme consisted of instruments selections by Messrs B. Hobbs, Ken. and D. Suckling; piano solo, Mr Eindlay Robb; duets. Miss Suckling and Mr F. Robb; vocal duets, Messrs Crewes and Hudson; humorous recitations, Mr A. Dey; songs, Messrs Crewes, Charles, and John McLean. Miss P. Suckling was accompanist. Hearty votes were accorded the performers, and Mr Suckling, who motored the party out from Christchurch. The ladies of the congregation entertained the performers at a dainty supper. Mesdames Brake and Dawson are visiting the Exhibition. SOUTH MALVERN. The annual social and sale of harvest gifts in connexion with the Presbyterian Church was held in the Public Hall, Glentunnel, and there was a good attendance. The Rev. J. J. Bates was chairman, nnd an amusing address was given by the Rev. A. B. Kilroy, of Eiccarton.' Songs were sung by- the Misses

Molly Bates and Connie Sealey and Mr E Bulmer; recitations by Miss Conme Sealey and Mr W. A. Nelson, and a xylophone sole was given by Mr Gardiner Mrs J. J. Bates accompanied the singers. After the concert the gifts were sold by Mr W.'A. Nelson, and the evening concluded with supper provided by the ladies. The pet proceeds were over £l4. . . . At the fortnightly meeting of the Coleridge Lodge of Oddfellows, N.G. 'Bro. W. B. Powell presided. The receipts for the evening were £6 18s lOd. Sick pay to the amount of £l7 3s 4d was passed for payment. Bro. D. Hartstongo resigned tho position of senior auditor and warden on account of his transfer to Dunedin. After lodge busi- | ness had been disposed of, the meeting sat as a social committee to make final arrangements for the ball on Friday. It was decided to ask Mrs James Tarling to take charge of the refreshment room, and further arrangements were left in the hands of Bros. W. J. Teale, P. 6., and A. M. Wilson, F.S. Successful local exhibitors at the Malvern Show last week were: Mrs D. Kane (Glentunnel), Mr A. F. Clark and family (Bush Gully), Mr James Deans (Homebush), and Master Billie Dunlop (Whitecliffs). The weather during the past week has been very mild, with occasional warm showers. These conditions havo caused fruit trees to come into bloom prematurely. The rainfall at "Westly," Coalgate, was 18 points on Tuesday, 12 points on Wednesday, and one point on Friday. Total 31 points. Word has been received that the electric transformer for the residents on the back road at Coalgate will arrive shortly.
