Accused was convicted, and ordered to eome up for sentence when called upon, and was ordered to keep away trom the Bay. Herd-TeStlng.

The proposal to torn? a Herd-Test-ing Association for South Canterbury was advanced a stage when the South Canterbury Jersey Cattle Club appointed representatives to act with tho Timaru A. and P. Association in tho matter. *

"It is no wonder that so many dairy- farmers ale in low water as they are to-day," the president (Mr Maddrcn) said. "There arc 6000 cows in South Canterbury, and their average last year was 1701b of butter-fat. Thero is no reason at all why this should not be brought up to 3001b, and what a difference this would make to the prosperity of South Canterbury. But while farmers use scrub bulls and dud cows, there is no hope of making any jirogress." Mr S. Uiiwin said the difficulty was accentuated by dealers who buy'scrub bulls in the sale yards, let theuiout for a month or two, and then scud them to the freezing works to be boiled down. Such a practice should be made illegal here, as it was in Denmark. (Hear, hear.)

Mr Maddrcn said that the mercantile firms would do a Jot if they would only do the same here as in those places where they refuso to finance any dairy farmer who uses a scrub bull.

Mr Unwin said their eyes would be opened if they went to a.Dutch saleyard, and then to a salo like that at the Teniuka yards. The trouble here was that farmers kept the heifers from their best cows, and then spoiled everything by using a scrub bull.

GERALDINE. In , connexion - with tlio Queon Carnival a fete was held on Saturday and proved highly .successful.. Tho programme comprised baby show, costuma football match, tug of war, obstacle' and bicycle rates, with other sports, and thero were numerous stalls and competitions, the Band being prosent. The obstacle and bicycle races provided excellent sport. The mile cycle race resulted: Ai'iist 1, G. Mlery 2;. A. Loach 3; tho two mile, G. j Ellery 1, Arnst 2, Bryan 3. and the three mile, Arnst 1, A. ifpach 2, Viall 3. For decorated bicycles and-go-carts the winners were Amy Davis 1, M. Knibb 2, Jas; Weaver 3. The motorcars of the respective Queens were very effectively decorated. A good deal of interest was taken in the sports, and the sevcvnl stalls did a good business. At the close .of tha sports the result of the competition for supremacy together with' the amount of money raised for each'of the Queens was announced to be as follows:—No. 1, Sports Queen, Miss N. Kennedy. £279 12s 8d; No.-2. Bands Queen, Miss Bryant, £269; No. 3, Library Queen, Miss Blakist'on, £216 16s lid; total, £765 9s 7d. To this amount will have to be added the takings at. the stalls and also the. takings at the crowning ceremonies on Thursday next, so that over £BOO is expected as the result of the carnival. After the announcement, the Mayor, Mr Kennedy, congratulated all who had taken part in the carnival, and said the splendid result was due to the friendly rivalry and keen efforts of the various committees.

The electric light failed.on Sunday evening until 7.35 p.m;j and caused some inconvenience at the . churches.

A young man, aged about 19 years, named Ferguson, a resident of Woodbury, was proceeding to the dog trials and rifling in a side-chair which on a steep bank became detached from the motor-cycle and shot down the bank. In addition to other injuries, young Ferguson was cut about.the face and head. He had only just recovered from a previous accident. Yesterday it was reported that he had passed a fairly good night. On Sunday, Harvest Thanksgiving services were held .in the Parish Church, which was beautifully decorated for the festival. The vicar, the Rev. H. Purchas, preached an eloquent sermon at the morning service, and at the evening service Mr Gilfillan was the preacher, and made an appeaL for Foreign Missions. At the Methodist Church on Sunday, the Rev. 11. Ford, who was recently appointed to Goraldine and who arrived here on Saturday, . conducted the services and delivered impressive sermons.

CLANDEBOYE. Beautiful weather attended the holding of the fourth annual Clandeboye carnival. A long and varied programme was gone through, some of the contests providing very keen competition. In thb evening a grand ball was held in the Clandeboye Public Hall. During the evening Mr T. Gunnion (Temuka), in a happy speech, congratulated the prizewinners and presented them with their prizes. Dancing was then resumed and continued till an early hour. The music was supplied by Lewis's Band (Timaru), while Mr A. Mackie and Mr S. Parke jointly carried out the duties of M.C. Financially, the results of the carnival exceeded the anticipations of the committee, a result which reflects great credit upon Mr J. Donehue (chairman) and Mr A. Mackie (hon. secretary). Ai the annual meeting of the Clandeboye Miniature Eiflo Club, Mr L. J. Grant, president of the club, presided. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and confirmed. The secretary, Mr L. Liddle, then read the statement of receipts and expenditure, which showed a credit balance of £4 Is

6d, This was considered very satisfactory, and on the motion of the president, seconded by Mr J. C. Bisdee, the bal-snce-sheet was adopted. The opening night was fixed for Wednesday. May sth, and it was decided to invite the Temuka Miniature Rifle Club to be present and fire a match on that occasion.

WAIMATE. Football was opened in Waimatc on Saturday by a mutch between .Star 'vThuaru) and Southern (Wainiate), the latter winning by thirteen points to three, after a fast, open "game. Tho season promises to bo successful here, four teams entering for the sub-union's junior and senior competitions. The union now possesses a property of its own, containing tliree playing areas and an elaborate grandstand, and all conveniences for the public. The annual meeting, of the Rugby Union disclosed a very satisfactory state ot affairs, tho balance-sheet showing a credit balance of £279 6s lid.

It is interesting to note that whilethe passenger traffic of tho railways decreased last year, the passenger traffic on the Waimato branch line increased. The Waimato lino is often •spoken of in railway circles as an undesirable orphan whoso way is not paid without assistance. A close examination of the data would convince any business man that the Now Zealand Railway system would bo the poorer for. tho loss of Waimate's five miles of line. The passenger returns show that in 19*24-2-3 the Waimate branch carried 23.894 passengers, and in 192-5-6 the number totalled 28.991, an increase of 5097, giving an additional revenue from passengers of £ISOO for the year. The total revenue at the .Waimate station increased last year no jess than £6490, and when the Waimate branch's earnings are examined together with their feeding value to the revenues of tho main lines, it must bo admitted that Waimate branch line is far from being a burden to the New Zealand Railways.

The Waimate Golf Club Las opened the season, a mixed foursome being played on the opening day. Mrs Hertslet and H. Weir returned tho best cards. The links are said to be in their best order to date.

Air Geo. Dash presided over tho r.nnual meeting of the Band of Hope. Tho balance-sheet showed tho finances to be satisfactory. Tlve election of officers resulted:—President Mr A. Shearer; secretary, Mr O. Anstisso; committee. Mesdamcs O'Brien, Itav v Sl:earer, Miss Shearer, ■ Messrs G. J. Rhaekleton, AV. Simpson. V. Haymnn. The first monthly meeting of the session will he held early in May.
