RAILWAY YARDS.
IMPROVEMENTS AT MIDDLETON. It is advised by the Railway Department that work on the new marshalling yards at Middleton is to be commenced in about ton days' time. ,Mr H. C. Lusty, Assistant District Engineer, told a representative of "The Press" yesterday that it was probable that within a brief period no fewer than about 100 men would be employed on the work. In the meantime a gang .of men would be put to work to prepare tho yards to carry temporary sidings for the trucks to be used in connexion with the work. There is not likely to be any scarcity of labour available, as since the Prime Minister had announced that the work was to bo put in hand, scores of applications had been received from men anxious to start as soon as possible. Except for one or two minor details, the recommendations of the local engineers to the Railway board, concerning the lay-out of the yard, have been approved. . The land selected to hold the yards consists of about 50 acres on the main south line, between Cutler's road and the Middleton station. It will contain 15 marshalling sidings besides a number of other sidings. It is estimated that the total cost of the completed work will be about £IOO,OOO. As far as is practicable the gravity system of shunting will be followed. With a grade of 1 in 50 it will be S V Vh ? a . train arti ™ at an arh A ng t0 be shunted along a certn ™ n £ C £'-,?
