Believed to bo the oldest woman in the country, Mary Ann Turner, better known as "Granny" Turner, an inmate of Oldham Poor Law Institution since 1917, is 109 years of age. The institutional card describes her as born in 1816, only a year after the Battle of Waterloo, and while the Napoleonic terror was still a real thing. When the present master of the institution 6aw her card record on his arrival just over out the year' of birth shown, being convinced that an error had been'made. Enquiry showed, however, that the original entry was correct, and it was restored.
