POSITION IN AUSTRALIA. (BT CABLE—PBEBS ASSOCIATIOK— COPTBt«6T.) (AUBTBALIAN AKD N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) MELBOURNE; March 8. Speaking on public health, the Federal Minister for Stealth stated that Australia was far behind New Zealand and many other countries in the matter of child welfare. He showed by statistics that 6 the maternity bonus had done none of the three things expected of it. It had not decreased infant mortality, saved mothers, "nor increased the birth-rate, although £8,500,000 had been spent on the bonus. The Minister added that the money had been well Spent if it had done any of these things.
