GREAT BINGEN.

AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP. WINS FIRST DISTANCE. Yesterday D. Withers, private trainer to Mr J. B. McKenzie, received 3" cable message from Perth, stating that Great Bingen had won the first distance of 1J miles of the Australasian Championship, the ex-New Zealander Taraire being second, and Vin Direct third. The Australasiau Championship is run over three distances, one mile and a quarter, one mile and a half, and two miles, £525 in stake money for each of theso races, an additional £425 to the horso scoring the greatest aggregate of points over the three distances, and £IOO each to heat winners. Tho second and third distances will be run on March 13th and 20th, respectively. Last year the Championship was won by Mr J. JR. Trengrove's chestnut stallion, Great Hope, driven by J. Bryce, jun. Great Hope suffered many setbacks in his training, but eventually proved himself a great performer. Great Bingen lias done everything asked of him in New Zealand and he is expected to emulate Great Hope's deed this year. D. Withers, the trainer, who was unable to make the journey to drive his favourite, considered that Saturday's race would probably be the hardest of the three and that Vin Direct would be the hardest horse to beat. Taraire, who finished second, was bred by Mr B. M. Morten, of Tai Tapu, and was taken with Great Hope last year to compete in the Championship. He was sold to Mr Jas. Shaw after the Meeting, and raced in his interests on Saturday. While in New Zealand Taraire wae considered a great two-miler, though a slow beginner, and was never seriously considered in first-class sprint event's. Evidently the change of' trainer has improved him in this respect. Keen interest is being manifested in the remaining two events to be decided, but sportsmen throughout New Zealand may rest content' that in Great' Bingen they have a' very worthy re- 1 presentative.
