ARBITRATION COURT. AWARDS ISSUED. ■ The Arbitration Court.lias issued its decision in the. matter of the - South Canterbury Local Bodies? Labourers' Award, and the dispute between, the Canterbury Builders' and General Labourers' Quarry Workers' aiid Wool and Grain Store Employees' Union, and tlie Geraldinc, Temuka, Timaru, and Waimate Borough Councils! .The award provides that the hours of work shall, not 'excied eight hours" each day on five dalys of the- week, and four hours on Saturday. The wages shall be paid fortnightly, aiid when not paid in the employers' time all : time exceeding 15 minutes shall bo paid for at, overtime,'rates. Work done on Sundays or any' of the award holidays shall be paid at the rate of double ordinary time. All tools shall be provided' by the employer. The 1 termination of the engagement shall be given by one hour's notice or ono hour's pay in lieu of notice. The following workers shall be paid a minimum rata of Is lid an hour : Men employed .on concrete work, pick and shovel work, sewer work, laying and cleaning drains, sweeping and cloaring streets, cutting grass, gardening, road and path formation (other than tarring), screening materials, and all work of a similar nature. CANTERBURY DRIVERS' UNION, The Court has also issued its decision in the matter of the dispute between the Canterbury Drivers' Union and the Ashburton Borough Council and other bodies. The award provides that the daily . working hours shall bo regulated in advance, according to tho special requirements of each Council or Board, but so that tho ordinary hours o£ work shall- be madfe to fall between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.- oh five days a week, arid 7 a.m. and 12 noon oh Saturday. A week's work shall not exceed 48 hours. All time worked beyond the hours prescribed shall be counted as overtime. The horse drivers shall receive a minimum wage of not less than Is lid an /hour, as also shall the drivers of motor vehicles. Drivers of nightsoil carts shall receive not less than 2s 6d an "hour. Wages shall bo paid weekly or fortnightly in cash, overtime included, not later than Friday in each week. Special arrangements may be come to between any local authority and the union for monthly payments in the case of workers other than casual hands. A week's notice of dismissal or resignation shall be given by the employer or the employee. A casual driver is defined as one who is employed .continuously ■ for less than a full week. The award for the North Canterbury General Labourers (County Council section) has also been issued by the Court, to take effect from March 15th, 1026, until March 15th, 1928. In his memorandum, Mr Justice Frazer says:— "The only matter argued before the Court was that of the rates of wages, which have been fixed in accordance with tho rates agreed upon by local bodies throughout the Canterbury Industrial District for somewhat similar classes of workers." ; s . The clauso relating to wages fixes the minimum rates to be paid to the several classes of workers at:— (a) Tunnelmen at rock tunnelling work, timber work, or sinking shafts over , 10ft, and men in charge of derricks or scaffolding where the scaffolding exceeds 16ft in height above its case, 2s 2d an hour. (b) Tunnelmen at clay tunnelling work, 2s an hour. (c) All other classes of labour. Is lid an hour. . , In connexion with payment of wages, it is laid down that wages shall be paid by tho Heathcoto and Waimairi County Councils fortnightly, and by the Paparna and Halswcll County Councils monthly, and when not paid in the employer's tinie all time exceeding fifteen minutes shall be paid for at overtime rates.
