TIMARU. Social and Personal. Mr and Mrs J. Badeliffe (North street) are back from Dunedin. Miss Culverwell (Elizabeth street) has returned from tho north. Mr and Mrs W. Fossey and Dr. E. S. Fossey are spending the week-end at the Hermitage. Mrs B. C. Goathem has returned to Dunedin after a stay with Timaru friends. Mrs J. Hicks (Waimate) has returned from a visit to Mrs Giles (Kurow). Mrs Howley (Sefton Btreet) has left on a short visit to Waimate. Miss Burton (England), who was with Miss Alice McLaren (Highfield), returned on Saturday to Orari. Mrs Howard Jackson (Dunedin), who was at Cadogan, Sefton street, went to Waimate on Saturday, Mrs D. A. Lawaon, who was the guest of Mrs Flanagan (Highfield), returned to Ashburton on Saturday. Mr and Mrs J. C. E. Turner (Wellington) are the guests of Mrs E. Button (Wilson street). Miss Moira Rickmau (Church- street West) motored to Dunedin on Friday with Mrs Page and Mr John Page, of Mount Geraldine, Tekapo. Mrs Pitts, who was the guest of Mrs Nevill-Smith (Sophia street) for the Nevill-Smith recital on Wednesday, returned to Waimate on Friday. Mr Nevill-Smith, who has been on a visit to Timaru, left to-day en route for Sydney. Mr and Mrs A. A. WagstirfF, who have been 011 a visit to Mr R. Malcolm (Temuka), left yesterday for Christchurcli, en route for their home in Te Arolia. ■ The Weather; Following the dull weather of Friday evening, Saturday was a day of glorious sunshine and blue skies. There was an entire absence of wind, and the atmosphere was oppressively hot. Conditions yesterday were similar to those of the previous day, but, if anything, the atmosphere was more oppressive. The bathing facilities on Caroline Bay were heavily taxed, both in the morning and in the afternoon. About 4 o'clock, however, a light easterly breeze sprang up and the air was cooler. Bowling. Tho Champion of Champion Singles was played on the West End green on Saturday in perfect weather, and was won by J. Gunn (West End), who defeated T. Edwards (Temuka) by 21 to 19 in tho final. Following are the results:— Section A—First round: West End 19, Kia Toa 12; Geraldine 11, Teinuka 10. Second round: Temuka 18, Kia Toa 8; West End 23, Geraldine 12. Third round: Kia Toa 17, Geraldine 16; West End 22, Temuka 10. West End (J. Gunn) won the section with three wins. Section B—First round: Timaru 20, Fairlie 10;. Temuka 22, Waimate • 20, Park 13, Ashbury 12. Second round: Temuka 17, Timaru 11; Ashbury 27, Fairlie 12; Waimate 28, Park 12. Third round: Timaru 23,-Waimate 14; Park 33, Fairlie 13; Temuka 19, Ashbury 11. Temuka (T. Edwards) won the section with three wins. < The "final was played off between Gunn and Edwards, and at the eleventh head the score was: Edwards 9, Gunn 11 The final score was: Gunn 21, Edwards TEJMUKA. The funeral of the late Mr MaJcolu Bill, who was fatally injured in a mjjor accident, took place on Thursday afternoon. The cortege was the largest seen in Temuka JEor some time, a;;d about 60 returned soldiers, unior the president (Major D. White), followed the hearse. The coffin was draped with the Union Jack. An impressive service was conducted by the Rev G.N. Watson at _ the graveside. Four returned soldiers, Messrs \V. Larcombe, J. Fisher, R. Beck, and R. Andrews acted as pall bearers.
