NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The Centre Challenge Badges competition, played on the Canterbury green last Wednesday between the holders (Cook, Sinclair, Vatkins, a,nd Gibte Jordan, s.), and a Canterbury Club rink (Hoggan, Maynard, Smith, and Angus), proved a very good game. The winners retained the badges by a margin of l point. The scores were, Jordan 10, Angus 19. At a meeting of the Methodist Ladies' Guild held last week in the parsonage, a motion of sympathy was passed to Mr and Mrs H. Taylor and family, in their recent bereavement. It was decided to hold the usual gifts sale, at the annual Harvest effort, on Monday evening, March 22nd. This year the receipts will be given to the year the receipts will be given to the general Circuit fund. Immediately after the Harvest Festival, the members of the guild will begin to work for their annual Spring effort, which ia in connection with the Flower Show, in September. The annual effort made by the Young Helpers' League, in aid of Dr. Barnado's Home, was on a much larger scale this year. In past years a social lias been held, when the collectors' boxes have been opened. This year it was decided to try and raise a much larger sum. On Saturday afternoon a sale of produce, cakes, sweets, and other gifts was held in tho District School grounds, and was a decided, success, £32 los lOd being raised; This sum does not include the children's collecting boxes, which have not yet been opened^ HAWARDEN. The members of the late Dr. Campbell's Memorial Committee met on Wednesday night to hand over the funds to the two permanent Trustees. It was decided to thank the Press for the lioJp it had given to the fund, also Messrs Lytte and Lytte for receiv'hg donations in Christchurch. One member • of the committee reported that people were complaining that they had not been asked to subscribe to the fund. The fund was practically a voluntary one, and thoso who wished to contribute can still send donations to the treasurer, Mr C. H. Willis, Farmers' Co-op., Ha warden. SEPTON. A special meeting of ths Sefton. Cricket Club was held on Friday evening in the Domain pavilion. Mr George Clark© was chairman. As the Sefton Club had received word that it had won the North Canterbury Associa/tion junior competition, it was decided to hold a social and danco in tho Rink Hall On March 19th, when delegates of the 'N.C.C. Association will present the cup. A married men v. single men cricket match was aranged for Saturday, March 13th, in the Domain, thus closing the season. The club decided to hold a church parade on the afternodn of March 28th in the Sefton , Presbyterian. Church, when a special sermon on "Athletics and Sports" will be delivered. MARSHLAND. The monthly meeting of the Marshland School Committees was held, last week. In the absenc© of Mr Goode (chairman), Mr Chisnall occupied the chair. The visiting conimittee reported that the conditions of the school and grounds were- quite satisfacory, with tlio exception of .the lavatories, and it was decided' to draw the attention of tin Board to this matter. The headmaster reported that the roll number had increased to 102. It was decided that the arrangements; for the card evenings, which were quite a success last winter, be left, over for the incoming committee.- Twenty-one scholars made' the trip to Dunedin with the first school excursion, accompanied bv Mr Pilkington, headmaster in charge of the boys, and Mrs Chisnall in charge of the girls. Mrs Chisnall and Mr Pilkington both reported very favourably regarding the conduct of the children, and also upon the complete arrangements made for their reception. The officials in Dunedin. were untiring in their efforts to make the visit to the Exhibition a most interesting and enjoyable one. SOUTHBRIDGE. Tlie monthly meeting of the Southr bridge Town Board .was attended by Messrs R. J. Parkin (chairman), A. Tong, J. H. Hampton, W. J. McEvedy, and R. A. Maw. A sum of £2 2s was voted to the Ellesmere Technical Association for expenditure upon the woodwork class at Southbridge. An application from Mrs Butler for the use of the Towii Hall anteroom on the occasion of theY.M.B.C. camp, to be held from April Ist to 6th, was granted. The Works Committee reported that pipes at Hill's corner had been cemented. Enquiries had been made by the- chairman regarding the cost of top-dressing the asliplialt footpaths, and the estimate had not come to hand. Complaints were made regarding the spread of Californian thistle and blackberry, and the opinion was expressed that stronger measures should be taken to compel property owners "to keep these weeds from spreading. It was decided to call the attention of the inspector to the matter. Complaints were also made regarding the stray stock nuisance, and it was decided to ask the police to prosecute owners who allowed stock to stray on the roads. The chairman reported that a request had been made to the Electric Power Board' to have the_ street lights changed over the series system, and that the engineer was looking into the matter. It was decided to have a lamn placed at the Pound corner. Mr McEvedy pointed out that traction engine drivers were not observing the clause in the bylaws relating to the breaking of tracks. It was decided to ask the Board's officer to keep a look out-for offenders. A resolution was carried instructing the clerk to sue for all rates outstanding after MarrTi 2otb. Mr McEvedy urged that the Board should make repredsn-=i-tions_ with a view to inducing i.he freezing companies to open their works for a short period before August so ns to deal with early lambs.
