SPORTING.

TURF GOSSIP.

Acceptances will be received up ti 6 p.m. to-day for tits Banks Peninsula Racing Club's Auturna. Meeting.

dominations are duo to-day for the Napier Park, Masterton, ajid Eangitikei Racing Clubs' Autumn Meetings. The Taranaki Trotting Club's Annual Meeting will bo held to-morrow. The steeplechasers Whipcord and Tigcrland arrived at Riccarton yesterday, and have gone into F. P. Claridge'3 stable. Other additions to Claridge's stable- include. Kilns and Gay Queen.

The English-bred filly Celerity 11. has been thrown out of work.. There is nothing seriously amiss with her, but the J spell will not do her any harm. The three-year-old filly Paper Rose, by Paper Money—Christmas Rose, has been blistered and turned out for a spell. Ethiopian (G. Salt) and His Majesty (O. Culltun) were given a turn over tho schooling hurdles ah Riccarton yesterday.

In view of a possible trip to-Australia Count Cavour is being kept moving along though nothing very serious is bctug asked of him. If the Solferino gelding does make- the trip he will probably be accompanied by Charlatan, who- looks well.

tni the Australian Cup, a sweepstake of 25 sovs each for starters, with 3000 sovs added, Piliiewinkie. is top-weight with the steadier of 9 6, and even with this weight allotted, he- was a very popular fancy, Keliaudicaps for tiie- Danaevirko Meeting are:—Tahoraite- Welter, Imitation 9.1; Eakaiatai Welter, Willow- Wai S.S; Oringi Hack Handicap, JJadarvno, 10 A; President's Handicap, Paponga, 8.?, Polyphemus 5.5. The weather was line for training operations at Riccarton yesterday morning, and though the plough track was. in good order, and a. lot. of horses engaged at. the Banks Peninsula Meeting were esercised, no sensational gallops were recorded. The Marlborough Trotting Club's Annual Meeting wil\ be held to-day. Good fields are engaged in the various events,. and exciting contests should be the order of the dav. In the Marlborough Handicap Audubon Child, on hi.s form at the Kaikoura Meeting,- appears to be well treated, and perhaps the North Island-owned Bicolour will show her best form, in which case she will bo. very hard to heat. In the Pash Handicap of one mile, E>ady Zora and Humriing Bird hold prospets of success, and in the Farewell Handicap there will be solid support for' Grey Thorpe and Honeywood. Though generally the nominations received for tha Waimate Racing Club's Meeting to be fceld on March 18th are not particularly numerous, the- horses entered for the Wairriata Cup represent- a better class than is usual)? found competing at; minor meetings in Canterbury. Roseday at his best is fife to take.his place in any field of horses that New Zealand can produce, and with such useful performers as Retrospec*, JBivalry, Mountain. I.ion, Baveona, Overdrawn, and Tarleton engaged, there; is every prospect of a good field going to the post, and » great rac« resulting. The sprinters in the Presidents Handicap, sis furlongs, can set. * merry pace, and the. time should be fij»% it Ruiv Up, Murihaupo, Dancing Tsays, and Fulmar strip at their best,' Handicaps for this meeting will be declared by Tuesday next. A good deal of interest? centres in tho Victoria Racing Club's Autumn Meeting which will be commenced at Flemington to-day. The principal handicap event to come up for decision is the Newmarket Handicap, of six furlongs, and it is worthy of note that the two top-weights, Top Gallant 10 2, and Tho Nighifc Patrol 9 12, were both imported from England. His briDiant victory sn th* CauTfieM Futurity Stakes, seven fuflongs, last Saturday, with 10 2 in the saddle, and the "fact that an offer of £12,000_; failed to induce hia owner to part with him, ; suggests that Top Oalhrnt is well above the average. Heroio B 8 and &ausanne 8 0, for a time ruled as favourites fdr tuis race, hut Top Gallant's last effort in public would gain fcim many friends.

With the rapidly improving going, Baldovra waa made a good favourite in the Autumn Handicap, but again ho failed to. roprcduco his D.J.C. 'Handicap form, and alter Th* Cheat had wade the pace to tho distance post, Happy Dars, who got a lucky run at the home turn, beat him easily to tho post. Happy Dayn had a. full apprentice's allowance, and handled the jolt going much better than ho is generally credited with being able to do.

Tho imported Bosenor was backed down to, ridiculously short odds in (lie Hokonui Hack, and started from eighth piac& at the barrier in a. field of thirteen. Hob, who was ridden by Bealo instead of Cotter, jumped out smartly and, leading nil the way, won fairly comfortably from the outsider in Arrov.-m.ii-. The favourite never showed up, and did not appear to be able to handle the going. Stockade Jiin. again let his followers down badly in the Progressive Harness Trot, and the winner was found in Boving Don, who waited on Ding Dong Bell until half a mile from home and just lasted long enough at the finish to beat Forbury, who finished fast from some distance back.

Jolly Glad wa3 made, a slightly bette-r favourite than Kapuna in the Second Jumpers' Flat, but was well beaten a furlong from home, and Kapuna- scored a lucky win by half a length from Soldier's Pride, who wa3 interfered with in3ido tho distance post. The goinjr va3 becoming quite sound when the Borough Handicap was set down for decision, and Lava, who had Emerson up, was made a good favourite. She led all the way, and beat Monoxide comfortably at tho finish.

Dillon Blake, who was mado a good favourite in tho Telegraph Saddle Trot, stood at tho post, and the Otago Central-owned Dolly Houi ju3t got up at. tho finish to beat Eons by a head. W. Jones rode a very vigorous finish on the winner and fainted on returning to scale. Full Swing was made only a. little better favourito than Apac-ho in tho President's Hack. The field cantered for- four furlongs; then the favourite joined Apache and tbey ran together to the home turn. Full Swing went on to win very easily from Courtly Rose.

NOTES ON THE KACING. (sjEcm, TO "THB tress.") The, Marlboro-ugh-Nolson Racing circuit wa* opened oa tho Waterlo* ctmrse to-day, under very favourable conditions, ilia weather being beautifully fine and a record crowd being present. This year for tho first tirao the Marlborough Racing Club its racing in advance of the Nelson Jockey Club, which usually sets tho ball rolling for tho circuit, but it seems questionable at this stags whether tho change hag hod the anticipated effect of improving tho fields, and all ono can say ia that taken all round they wero not very eatisfactory in point of numbers, the scratching pen being responsible for two or three singla dividend contests which had a quits noticcabl* effect on tho toialisator returns. Tha racing was characterised by remarkably close finishes, and at tho cohclueion of tha day, in epit© of. tho downward trend of tho machine figures, Iho club was only £597 down on last year's total. The old-established Marlborough Cup fell to Trosharn, who ia owned by Mr J. A. Taylor, a Wellington sportsman, who won tho race moat convincingly when called on over the last furlong. The winner is trained by D. McCauloy, of Herotaunga, who also had the honour during tho afternoon c-f leading in Sasham as the, winnor of two cvcnt3. 1 Sasham has been eteadily on tho improve, sad hia performances, which were both meritorious, demonstrate that ho has outgrown tho littla shortcomings which have' kept him in tha backgiound so long. ' Tha public were remarkably accurate* in their estimate of the worth of the various horsee in tha different events, tho favourite petting home in tho majority of crans and th« dividends in consequence being email. A case in point was tho Kovices Hack Race, with which the mooting opened. Saghtmi carried moro than twice fis much money as Kyla, who was tho only other ono of the field much fancied, and the two finished first and second. Kyla, Silo, and Royal Game led to the straight, where Sasham put in a challenge and wore down the field, beating Kyla home by a length, with Tnkaka a length and' a half back third, and Royal Game, who ran his best race to date, fourth. The public worn also correct in regard to tho Cup, in which Trcsham was made a •very good favourite in a one-dividend field. Tho Waefea-Zero Hour bracket and Katakaua were th.B r.ext bci't fancied. Kalakaua and Waetea, were the first out, and in the back stretch Waetea, ran away from the Demosthenes gelding to establish such a lead as to make her look a certainty. The tail-end of the distance, however, found her tiring badly, and in tho straight tho favourite, ridden a well-timed raco by P. Mcßrearty, wore her down and won "with nearly a length in hand. Bon March was three lengths further back third, and Kalakaua, who had every chance, was a rather bad fourth.

Saakam was produced ajrain for (he Dash ttack Handicap, but in eoito of bis excellent showing in th e Novices' Race, the public Pre.en-ed the chances of Tempcan, who earned over a third of tho money en tho machine, phantasy and Tempean were- the nrst out, but Phantasy faded away at the corner, where- Sasham, coming with a rattle, get on forms with the favourite, and went o.s to win very convincingly by a couple of lengths. The weight evidently told on the favourite-, who could not foot it when the pressure was put on. Too v.uch uso was made ot Phantasy in the earh- stage* and she was an indifferent third. "Snnbath w<is fourth.

in the Sumiaer Handicap, and won when called en He loft the curly tmmrn? to Megalo and Kins Cheops, but was shaken up entering the straight and won with a bit m hacd by half a length from King Cheeps, with Prinfemps, who finished well, a neck back third nnd. Megnlo fourth. T> ,t lCe r fi<<ld Ct nin °' iicM °P fOF tfa ° Erookby Welter, and Moutfla Ladv wao elected a rather bettor favourite than B-onatic and Helen Winkie. There was fair support for Axle, but the others were at fancy prices. Mooufacr; was the first to sho-v out, with Ax!o end Bonatic in attendance, and nftcr fcur furlongs had been covered Aslo took lip the role of paeemaStsr, and showed llio way past the distance post to Moonface,

Helen Winkie, and Bonatic. with tho others bunched. Ar.le and Moonfaca were, proceeding to. fight out the finish when ileutoa Lad}' camo with a rattle and. finding the way open on the- rails, got the judge's verdict by a neck from Axle. Moonfaee T.'as only e, head back third, and Bonatic was half a length further back fourth. 1 Eoues and Beaumont were the only two fancied in the Blenheim Welter, and tne public vera again right, -or just auotit it. Beaumont, AiegaJo, and Para showed the way to the straight, where Koucx challenged, and a, splendid finish ensued, Beaumont landing homo a neck ahead of Rouex, villi Probate, who finished like a : champion, a similar distance back third. Para was close up fourth. Tho trotting events produced splcnaic fir-Ids and good racing. There -.-ere. no .uratcbinga in (he Siarboro Trot, *he lull Sold of 14 being harnessed up. Sarsapanlla. was most fancied, but there was sood support for several of tho othora. Theda, ono of the Christchurch brigade, was tho first U> settle- to. work, and led past >ho stand with, a comfortable- advantage, over SarsaparilLi. Countess Eve, and a strung-out field. Tho order remained inichangod until the. straight was reached, where Sarsapanlla was overhauling Theda rapidly. Opposite tho stewards' stand SarsapanHa, went to a break, and appeared to be out if it, biu lecovercd. Then Theda, who .had trotted fanlt'esslv up to- this stage, lost her feet, and the 'favourite passed her in a flash to win by a -couple or lengths. Bon Elect camo from the back to secure third place, three length!*, behind Theda. Holly Audubon was fourth. The A water© Trot was productive of a remarkaMv lino finish. Vikota unci Dillon s Pride were tho first out, and established a nice lead. The two raced neck nnd necu from end to end, and a most thruling encounter ensued in the straight. Whips were out and both horses trotted fan tlessly. First one would have the advantage and then the other. The crowd cheered with excitement: Passins tho post Vikota had a head's advantage. Fair Dillon was three lengths back third, and Nellie Parsons fourth. The winner's display was a very pleasing one, and she clipped 12 l-oscv. oil ber handicap. She is owned by Mr xi. L.. Fuller, of Blenheim, and is by Brent Locanda from a Petereia. mare. The perform-ni-ee of Dillon's Pride was also impressive Honevwood nnd Latest Fashion, who/lid so wo 1! at Kaikoura, were too far oack to baye a chance with tho others.
