Both batsmen were confident and were going out to th© bowling. Fifty-seven was reached beforo McLaughlin was oaught at ooverpoint. Stakes was still batting freely, and although he lost O'Brien, Welch, and Ellis in cloee succession, 125 had been tcored whon the fifth wicket fell. Quard was the next man, and although ho looked like making runs, ha got lbw to Groves when the total was 140. Darby stonewalled and Stokes passed the century with a two off Trevethan. At 191, Darby went lbw. Murray hit out, and runs came more quickly. Shortly before'the adjournment, Stokes caught behind the etumpa when the total was 282. He had scored a very fine ana aggressive 164, pnd had been at the wickets whilst 278 runs were being scored. After the luncheon adjournment, 300 came -up. and shortly afterwards Murray secured luß oeiltury with, a drive to the off. J. lie innings closed for 827 runs. The Otago batsmen opened cautiously, tut when the total was 35 Windle mistimed one from Smith, , and was bowled. Bain commenced to fall, and the rate of , B , Co , nn ® plowed down. "When 30 had been added to the total Oonradi was bowlod by a fast one from Murray. Junior Match. Canterbury opened badly, Macartney and Mannix being dismissed without scoring, whilst O'Brien did not last long. All three batsmen had fallen victims to Groves, who was bowling with a fine length and gathering pace from the pitch. Grenfell and King played carefully, but finally the former got lbw to Torrance. Hobson was aggressive, and 70 was reached before the next wicket fell, Hobson being well caught on the boundary. He had scored a useful 25, which included one six and four fours. The remaining batsmen showed little form, and the innings closed for 83.

Otago opened well, the first wicket realising 35, when Hardman was run out. The total still mounted quickly, and although Mount and Leader went fairly cheaply, H. Cameron batted well, although lie gave chances, and the fifth wicket fell for 149. Torrance was aggressive, but did not last long, and the innings closed for 189.

Rain had been failing for some time when Canterbury commenced their second innings, and the f>itch was slow. Macartney and Grenfell .batted soundly, .and the first wicket realised 46 runs. Both batsmen then were disposed of, and' although O'Brien batted nicely, Mannix and King were dismissed early. At time, four wickets were down for 69. Scores:-

SHEFFIELD SHIELD. (BT CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION'—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received January 14th, 10.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, January 14. In the Sheffield Shield match against South Australia, New South Wales completed its second innings for 593 (Kippax 71. Kelleway 75, Taylor 82, Andrews 72, and Punch 26). Grimmett took six wickets for 202, Whitty two for 99, and A. Richardson two for 35. South Australia in their second innings are one down for 27. The weather was fine and the wicket S °lCippax and Kelleway opened splendidly, scoring freely all round the wicket, but the partnership was broken by a ball rolling from Kippax's shoulder to the stumps. Kelleway was dismissed shortly afterwards, having given three easy chances. Scoring then slowed down, the batsmen declining to take risks. Andrews briehtened play, being the only batsman who tackled Grimmett with confidence. Taylor who was quiet until partnered with Andrews, then livened, and the score advanced rapidly. Runs then continued to come at a great rate, the batsmen playing with great vim. After they were dismissed, scorin* asrain plowed down. The bowling arid fielding of the South Australians was excellent. Alexander was unable to take the field because he was suffering from influenza. TEST TRIAL TEAMS.
