An explosion in the Birchenwood Colliery, Kidsgrove, Staffordshire, oocurred when the afternoon shift was still bolow the ground. A fire followed the explosion. All were saved excepting seven, the body of one of whom was brought up yesterday. There is littTo hope of saving the other six. There were 378 men in the pit when the explosion occurred. Many of these were burnt, and others had to hack their way out. Rescuers, who rushed to the scene, worked heroically all night. Rescue efforts were later abandoned owing to the rapid spread of the fife.
