DANCE RECITAL. At her studio oh Saturday night, : Mrs J. Hulme entertained her pupils and a large number of their parents and friends at a charming party, at which the children demonstrated for their elders the great progress they had made in the study of dancing during the year. The professional experience and training of Mrs Hulme, who is perhaps better known to the public as. Eva Moore, formerly a valued member of the Pollard Opera Company, is a valuable asset to her as a teacher of dancing, and her pupils reflect her skill, and give' proof of her very careful training. The following programme was greatly enjoyed :—Exercise Demonstrating Ballet Technique by pupils; solo, Miss Dot Grose; The New Hats (in hat boxes), by the babies; "Pierrette," a quintette with solo by Miss Thelma Jones; solo, Miss Dorothy Malnhire; Chinese Ballet by pupils; Duo, Misses Dorothy Manhire and Thelma Jones, song, Miss Dot Grose; "A "Woodland Episode," in which 35 children danced; duo, Miss Dorothy Manhire. Thompson, Masters PeoDles (2), Hulme, Weston, Newburgh, Thompson. CONCERT AT ADDINGTON. , One of the finest entertainments' held in Aldington for some time was given by Mr C. Buckett's gymnasium girls, assisted by some of the City's leading artists, on Thursday evening, in St. Mary's Schoolroom, PaTk road. The concert was in aid of St. Anne's Home for girls. There were over eightv clever performers, and their splendid efforts called for enthusiastic applause from a very appreciative audience. The Wonder Girl, 1: tic Joan Hughes, charmed the audience with her songs in character, whilst the Wood Nymphs and Pierrot Ballets were pretty items, the frocking of the Nymphs being distinctive. '' Cherry Blossom Time," given by a bevy of little girls in Japanese costumes, was another popular item. Jungle Town Jinks, which was given by the little girls, dressed as monkeys and bears, caused much merriment. Mr Chas. Coates did conjuring tricks, Miss Nancy Chisholm contributed a solo dance, and the Misses McLean (2), Hanson and Birmingham, danced an Irish reel. An Irish country dance was exceedingly well performed 'by the little girls' class. The extension exercises, trapeze, parallel bars, tumbling, and pyramids by the older classes were well executed, and reflected great credit on their instructor, Mr C. Buckett. Miss Dorothy Wicks proved a very capable accompanist. Mr V. H. Line was chairman. At the close of the programme Mr Sidney Smith called for a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Buckett and his concert troupe for their splendid entertainment.

CARNIVAL CABARET. The promoters of the Henley-on-Avon Fete aro certainly possessed of splendid energy, for, far from being exhausted by their arduous duties on Saturday afternoon, they continued their activities well on into the night ajid were only curtailed by the arrival of the Sabbath morn. In the Winter Garden a highly successful and enjoyable cabaret dan:'': was held, a very large number of guests dancing to the music of Large's Aeolian Hand, who gave their services free of charge. The tables wero decorated with irises and yellow daisies, and the members of the committee —Mrs F. B. Dudley (organiser), Mrs Beveridge Davis. Mrs H. S'. E. Turner and Mr G. L. Donaldson (secretary) —attended noblv to their duties. The proceeds of the cabaret will lie divided amongst St.. Anne's Guild. St. George's Hospital, and the Rangers. Mrs Dudley wore black souplo satin, with yoke and circular flounce of black radium laee; Mrs Turner, rose pink georgette, embroidered in crystal beads ; Mrs Davis, flamei georgette, slightly draped and finished with pearl trimming.

PLAY RECITAL. December has. become, by common consent, pre-eininently the "Children's Month," and during the weeks that procede the Christmas holidays, parents have a busy, albeit a, proud and happy, time, attending "breaking-up'' ceremonies, drill displays, and gatherings for the distribution'of prizes.

A uovcl entertainment, at which a large number of parents and friends of the performers spent a pleasurable time, was held at "To Whare" on Saturday afternoon, when Miss Loam s pupils, ranging from tiny children ot tender years to grown-up girls, enacted two French plays. Miss Loam, who welcomed the guests on arrival, wore a handsome frock of black marocain with touches of grey crepe rle chine. Tho room was effectively decorated with beautiful flowers, tho front of the stage being banked with delphiniums and lilies. Before the curtain rose on tho first play, Miss Loam gave a short, enlightening address on the difficulties experienced in teaching the irench language! Next, five very attractive little girls—Ann Fell, Sheila Macdonald, Juliette Heygate, Alison Clark, and Judith Barker —astonished their audience by their proficiency in the Fronch language, their animation and enthusiasm in tho playlet, "Al'Ecole.'' They certainly merited the rounds of appiause that* rewarded their performance. . . In the second and moro ambitions play, Elizabeth Acland apd Janet Stevenson played the part of two children who lived with their grandparents, and in tho absence of their elders, "dress up" and impersonate their grandparents with such success that they deceive Augustine, a little countrv maid, played by Judith Barker. Elated with tlieir success, they continue in their assumed roles and many amusing situations arise before the arrival of Tante Louise (Ann Morris). HOME ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION. The T.M.C.A. Hall was well filled on Friday evening, it being the final meeting of the Home Economic Association. The meeting took the form of an entertainmcnt, the proceeds going to the Children's Fresh Air Home. The Association usually hold an exhibition of hand-work to wind-up the year, but owing to the Dunedin Exhibition, it was impossible this year to make such a display, so the entertainment was riven in its place. % Songs were given by Mrs H. T. Bowker, Mrs F. A. Boocock and Miss M. Omerod; piano solo, Mrs H. b. Kobinson: and a comedietta by Misses J. rnd M. Morgan. The first half of the programme was given by Mr J._ Kennedy, who screened a large number of beautiful views of the West Coast road from Christchnreh to the Franz Josef Glacier. Some delightful sunset scenes and wonderful frozen spray pictures were also shown, causing those in the audience who have not visited the West Coast to decide on taking the first opportunity to view this beautiful scenery of mountains, . riyers, lakes, and bush.

On Saturday afternoon in the Parish Hall. Sumner, Miss • Nancy Young entertained her pupils, with their parents and a few friends, at afternoon tea to mark the conclusion of the year's lessons.

The stage aaid tea tables were prettily decorated with bowls of sweet peas and roses. ,

The following pupils demonstrated the progress made in their studies dur-, ing the year by playing a number of duets, solos, and a trio, with much, taste and expression:—Misses Eunice Whitfield, Kathleen Dobson, , Una Powell, Marie Gee, Gwen Gee, Shield,. Stevens, Naida Macanley, and Masters A. Macauley, 11. MacLachlan, It. Dobson, and Harrild Kempthorne. Miss Young also played a solo, and the Eev. E. C. W. Powell, in a very neat speech, presented the prizes for progress to Miss Una Powell and Master P.. Mac•Lachlan. A very pleasant little gatherins closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

VALEDICTORY. A pleasant gathering of the staff of Messrs W. D. and H. O. Wills (New Zealand) Ltd., was held last week, to wish good luck to one of the staff, Mr G. S. Wren, on the occasion of his approaching -marriage to Miss Edna Harrison. Mr A. T. 0. Sellars, on behalf of the , directors, handed Mr Wren a cheque with their very best wis/hes for his future happiness. Later, Mr Jt. B. Wheeley, on behalf of the Christchurch staff, presented Mr Wren with a dinner service, and in a few well-chosen words expressed tho esteem In which Mr Wren was held by all who knew him, and more particularly bv his fellow workers on the staff. In responding, Mr Wren stated that he was greatly honoured by the complimentary speeches made on h v is behalf, and thanked the directors, and the staff for their handsome presents. The . usual toasts being honoured, the gathering concluded by the singing of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." '

DIXIELAND. The usual weekly dance took placo at Dixieland on Saturday evening, when -The supper tables were prettily decorated with irises and sweet peas, and the lounge with large bowls of roses, pot plants, and palms.
