NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

The Churches, At St Faith's to-morrow services -will be held at S am. and 11 aja, and the vicar will preach. At the evening aarviee the anthem "And the Glory** (Handel) will be sung, and the preacher will be Mr Geo. Stening, chairman of the N.Z.C.M.S. The evening service at North Beach will be conducted by the Eev. W. P. Knowles. The services at the Methodist Church to-morrow will be conducted at 11 a.m. by the Eev. E. D. Patchett, and at 6.30 pjn. by the Bev. F. T. Bead. Soldiers' Memorial Committee. The final meeting of the War Memorial Committee was held in the Council Chamber on Thursday. Present—The Mayor (Mr J. Gamble), and Messrs J. H. Shaw, E. T. Lees, William Miles, A. P. Hopkins, C. W. Bishop, H. E. Gott, and W. H. Gahagan. Apologies were received from the Bev. C. W. L Maclaverty and the Eev. F. T. Bead. The statement of accounts, as presented by the secretary, Mr J. H. Shaw, showed that there was a debit balance of £ls 6s 2d, which was to be regretted. On tho motion of Mr Gahagan it was resolved that a final appeal be made to the residents in the direction of raising the necessary amount to pay off the balance still owing. On the motion of Mr Shaw, a special vote of thanks was passed to those gentlemen who had acted as collectors on the occasion of the two unveiling ceremonies.

The great success attending the final ceremony of unveiling the memorial by his Excellency the Governor-General was, in the opinion of the ■ committee, due in a great measure to the untiring efforts of the Mayor and Cr. J. H. Shaw, to whom a very hearty vote of thanks was passed. 8.A.0.8. At the meeting of the New Brighton Lodge (4645) of the E.A.0.8. the election of officers resulted as follows: C.P., Bro. Mallasch, CM. Bro. A. P. Hopkins; C.C., Bro. A. Branch; C.T., Bro. C. Hollands; C.8., Bro. Herron; CO., Bro. Messervey. Before proceeding with the order of business a motion of sympathy was passed with his Majesty the King (who is head of the Order) and the other members of the Royal Family in their recent great bereavement by the death of the Queen Mother, the late Queen Alexandra. The* motion was passed in silence, all Brothers standing. It was understood that the Grand Lodge were sending a cable to Ms Majesty through his Excellency the Governor-General, conveying the sympathy of the New Zealand Lodges. Annual Smoke Concert. The annual smoke concert of the Beresford Club was held in the club room on Thursday. The president, Mr W. Nuttall, was in the chair, while the patron, Mr J. C. Scott, was amongst the many present. The toast list comprised:—"The Bong," "Honorary Members," "Kindred Sports," "The Ladies," and "The Press." An enjoyable programme was given by Messrs Butterfield, Ardern, W. P. Hopkins, N. Brading, J. Nuttall, A. P. Hopkins, G. Elliott, J. Hill, T. Adnams, A. W. Owles, and others.

Surf Club. The local Surf Bathing and Life-Sav-ing Club purpose opening their season's activities to-morrow afternoon. Annual Picnic. The members of the local Municipal Band are holding their annual picnic at Pleasant Point to-morrow. New Brighton Cricket Cfnb. Eichards, C. Scott. Senior Cadets. Numbers, 1, 2, and 3 Platoons are completing their musketry course this afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m. Open-Air Entertainments. The business people have subscribed funds to meet the cost of holding openair entertainments either on or in the vicinity of the Stadium. No charge will be made. It is hoped to hold the entertainment on Saturday afternoon and evening next. South Brighton. The first of a series of socials to be held in connexion with the forthcoming gala was held in the Bridge street Hall, and was a pronounced success. Instrumental, vocal, and elocutionary items were given by the Misses Weavers, Messrs L. Snook, and F. Woodward. Dance music was played by Mesdames H. Eobinson and J. Chegwin. Mr F. Woodward was M.C. The cake stall organised by the members of the Ladies' Committee resulted in nearly £7 being added to the gala funds. The last of a series of card evenings, held in the South Brighton Hall, resulted in Mesdames J. Chegwin, S. Grammar, and Messrs A. W. Scarr and C. Cross securing the prizes. Weddings. Two pretty weddings were held at the new Anglican Church, St. Faith's, this week. Miss Thclma Eides was married to Mr Frederick Norman Smith, and Miss Gladys Bellamy to Mr James Wilson.
