NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. I At a meeting of the committee of the Rangiora branch of the Young Helpere League it was decided that "an afternoon" should be held early in February for the purpose of supplementing the children's efforts in raising funds for Dr. Barnardo's Homes. BROOKSIDE. A dance was held in the Brookside Schoolroom, on Friday evening, in aid of the cycling club. Mr McDonald's Orchestra (Rahaia) played the music Mr Ellis acted as M.O. Extras were played by Mr O. Hampton and Bliss V. McCabo (Doyleston). LAKESIDE. On Thursday night the Elksmere Gun Club's annual dance took place and visitors were present from all parts of Canterbury. Macdonald's Orchestra played the danoe musio, and extras were played by Miss G. Thian and Miss Alexandra. Mr T. Gordon was M.C. LE BON'S BAY. The monthly meeting of directors of the Le Bon's Bay factory was held on Monday. Present—Messrs P- Barnett (chairman), W. Maokay, W. 12liott, R. O'Connor, and T. Mcintosh. Mr I. Barker was appointed a director in place of Mr B. Barker, who has left the bay. It was decided to pay Is oer lb butterfat, which would absorb £684. The supply of milk during the month shows a slight decrease compared with the same month last year. Mrs EHiston, of Woodville (North Island) and her little daughter who have been/spending a week with Mr and Mrs J. Gurney in Le Bon's, have returned to the north again. Recent visitors to Christchuroh are Mrs J. Gurney, Mr and Mrs G. Gray, Miss Leonardo, and Miss Frances Leonardo. Mrs A. Grotty has returned home with her little daughter, who had the misfortune to fall on a tin and cut her face some time ago, and has been away for medical treatment. The weather for the past week or so was very fine, but on Wednesday night there was a change to a very cold south-west wind with rain and snow.

SPRINGSTON SOUTH. At the Social Committee's long night euchre and dance the ? m £ s were won by Mrs Musson and Mr S. Bennett. After supper the hall was cleared for dancing, the music being supplied by Mr and Mrs Quaife. HORORATA. 4 euchre party, organised by Mrs Carter, was held in the hall* in aid the coming fete. The following were awarded prizes:—Ladies: Mrs G. Timmings 1, Miss Oliver 2, (Mrs W. O'Brien 3: men. Mr William Page 1, M r William Mr A. Oliver 3. Consolation prizes were given Mrs A. J. Harris and Mr Quickenden. On three previous occasions during the month light rains fell, but on Wednesday evening a very welcome and much-needed rain from the south Bet in. On Thursday snow fell on high parts of the district and a heavy frost was experienced on Friday morning. The School Committee's weekly euchre tournament was held in the school on Thursday evening, in aid of r 'Obristmas Tree" and sports fund. The winners-were t-^Ladies: Mrs S. R. ■ Wright 1, Mrs J. McHugh 2; men, M. Page 1, Mr L. Mooar 2. Mr and Mrs S. R. Wright hare returned from at visit to the North Island* SHEFFIELD. Very wintry conditions prevailed over the district on Thursday. The morning, which broke fine and warm, quickly changed, and ominous clouds in the south-east portended a storm. A few light showers fell before noon, and thev were followed by a sharp shower of hail, some of the stones measuring over half an inch. Fortunately, the duration of the hail fall was short. Heavy radn followed, which soon gave place to snow and wind. The hills wero coveied to the foot with a light coating of snow, and when the weather cleared, late in the evening, a very severe frost resulted, audi much damage will be done to gardens. The gauge registered 30 points of rain during the day, making a total for the month to date of 175 points. Feed is fairly plentiful and laste crops are coming away well, but the early stuff is running up very spindly owing, no doubt, to the ivery wet conditions during winter and early spring.

I KILLINCHY. I A large number attended the first dance given by the Killinchy Miniature Rifle Club on Thursday night, when ai presentation of trophies was made. The hall was colourfully decorated, and music was supplied by Mrs R. Lambie's Orchestra. The club was formed late in the season, and time permitted of only a short programme of shoots. The presentations were made by the presiident, Mr J. EL Millar, to the accompaniment of congratulatory applause. A welcome was extended to all the firuests, and the donors of trophies were especially thanked. The following received trophies, the names of the donors being given in parentheses:—L. Ohappel (B. Reeoe, Ltd.), J. Merrick ('Messrs Hammond and Turner), T. MoIlraith (Mr T. J. Fussel), Gordon Burt (Mr J. Millar), EL R, Boal (Messrs Ohapman Bros.), J. Boal (Mr J. Spence), D. Boal (Mr R, J. Caldwell), G. Pearce (Mr A. A. McMillan), D. Boal (Mr W. McClure). The lastmentioned trophy was awarded for most bulls in competition shoots, the winner scoring 33 oat of a possible of 40. DOYLKSTON. The programme of the Boxing Day sports as revised by the programme committee was adopted by the general committee of the Doyleston Athletic dob, at a meeting held tiria week. Several races for junior compe titers have been added with a view to encouraging them to enter for the standard events in years to come. The cycling track at Osborne Park was reported to be in good order, having been graded and rolled. Messrs B. Brown and S. Woods offered trophies for the married women's race. It was decided to award trophies for most points in eyeling and running, and members were urged to canvass for trophies. The following stewards were appointed?— Potato egg and spoon race, hop, step and jump, Messrs J. Williams and W. 0. Ronnie; caber tossing and shot putting, Mr B. Maw; boys' races, Messrs H. LAKESIDE. At a meeting held at Lakeside, the committee of the EHesmexe Aquatic Crab prepared the programme for its annual regatta. The programme used for the last regatta was adopted practically as it stood, with the addition of a 100 yards handicap boat race in the land sports seetion. This race has been added by way of experiment, and if it is won patronised, the land sports committee has been authorised I to add other races at its discretion. Several new names were added to the membership list It was deeided to ask the Hon. Sir Heaton Rhodes to open the new pavilion, the building of which is now in progress. The secretary reported that a well had been sunk near the' site of the pavilion. The eost of the building and the well is expected' to exceed slightly the estimate of £2OO. The committee decided to request the Comity Council to have the road leading to Fisherman's Point put in good order by New Year's Day. PREBBLETON. The spell of dry weather was broken on Wednesday evening, when heavy rain fell for several hours. The following morning dawned fine, but soon after midday a south-west rain set in, accompanied by lightning and thunder. The downpour continued until early evening, when it eased 6"ff. Much benefit will be derived from the rain by both crops and gardens, which have suffered considerably from she dry spelL So much favour did Corsair Bay find with those who attended the school picnio last year, that it has been decided to hold this year's outing there on December 10th. A memorial service for the late Queen Alexandra was held in the Anglican Church yesterday morning. The quarterly meeting of the Loyal Jubilee Lodge, TT0.0.F., M.U., was held on Wednesday evening, Bro. O. Hands, N.G., presiding over a fair attendance of members. Sick pay was passed to one member, and a maternity bonus to another. The election of officers for the ensuing half-vear resulted as follows:—N.G., Bro. W. Stevens; V.G.. Bro. L.
