A new aviary for Ivew Zealand native birds has been constructed at the Auckland Zoo at the rear of the cranes' enclosure, and should prove an attractive spot for visitors. The building is a well-designed one, having a length of 40 feet by a width of 20 feet, with a curved roof, giving an extreme height of 16 feet. This aviary is intended to house pukeko, rail, weka, and kiwi, and has been planted with fern and native trees, while a stream of running water passes through it., Within the past few months there has been born at the Zoo several animals which are the first of their different species to be born in New Zealand, and they all appear to be thriving greatly. Among them are a young black bear, a sacred baboon, and a young porcupine, while the feathered tribe have been increased by nine • young Egyptian geese and nearly forty native and . imported duck.
