LAW FLOUTED.
CRITICISM OF LABOUR DEPARTMENT. (rBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, November 26. The action of the Department of Labour in bringing what was "described, as "purely a technical and very trivial case" before the Arbitration Court, while at the saute time it had allowed the grocers of Sumner and New Brighton openly to flout the law, was the subject of sharp comment by Mr Justice Eraser in the Arbitration Court to-day. His Honour said the Court was at a loss to understand why the Department brought such an action when on the evidence before them they must have understood that it was most unlikelv that any Court would impose a, penalty or regard the matter as anything but a very trivial.and e-scusatte breach. It seemed strange that the action should'have been brought when ohlv the other day at Christchurch the Court was informed that for several weeks, for months, in fact, the Department had allowed grocers at New Brighton and Sumner to flout- the award in connexion with closing day. Some grocers wanted to keep toeaward, but were forced: into breaking it bv the action of the Department. This* had been going on for weeks and months. Why no action had been taken had passed comprehension.
