SYDNEY'S TRAFFIC.

MR W. H. WINSOR'S OBSERVATIONS. fllV YV. H. Winsor, who lias recently returned to Christchurch from a trip to Australia, has supplied ''.Roadster r with the following comments on the traffic- in iSyjdney:— In proportion to population motorlorries ai-e, not so evident as in Christchurch and there are still a great many horse-drawn vehicles to be seen on the streets. Numerous hansom cabs and spindly four-wheeler buggies are in u?e, but the number of bicycles and motorcycles ridden is noticeably small. .! Traffic moves along much i aster in the streets of Sydney than in Christchurch, and pedestrians, if they leavo the footpaths,' must look after themselves; they are not allowed to impede the traffic. Sydney has outgrown its passenger carrying facilities and at 5 o clock it takes a tram as Ion" as 20 minutes to get from Circular Quay to the vicinity'of the Town Hall in George street—a distance of about half a mile. Ab this point the lines diverge, allowing the services to be speeded up. The Sydney trams are under the control of the Government. Tho omnibus traffic has grown to considerable proportions and'there are some very fine types of this class of vehicle to be seen, particularly the .double-deckers. There are hundreds ■of taxis plying for hire, including 200 yellow taxis. The police control at street intersections is everywhere effective, and otic lesson I have learnt is that to deal with the question of traffic in narrow streets, especially during the busiest hours of- tho clay, it is essential that traffic should tra.vel one way only. Since I wa.s last in Sydney there has been a marked improvement in the roads, most of which are now constructed of wood blocks on concrete ■with an asphalt top.
