IN BEST CONDITION.

ROADS TO DUNEDIN. CHRISTCHURCH MOTORIST'S OPINION. The following letter, which has been sent to "Roadster" from a correspondent signing, himself "R.W." and which describes the state of .the roads between Christchureh. and Dtinedin, will no doubt be read with interest by those who are contemplating taking their motor-cars to the Exhibition City within the next few months: — Having just returned from a trip to DuncdiiC -1- thought a few words regarding tho roads, etc., would perhaps assist intending travellers, on the south roads. I must say that, generally speaking, the roads are at present in the best condition that I have - ever known them. Several of tho water-races need to be crossed carefully, for seemingly they have been recently cleaned out, and are a bit sudden on tho back springs, if taken too rashly. From soon after leaving Irwell until the Rakaia River h reached the road is badly holed or covered with loose shingle,' but this does not occur again, until taking the branch road (from the fork to Waimatc) down to Olenavy. From the Waitaki bridge there is the usual nasty stretch along the railway until the turn for Oamaru. The road then is especially good as far as Palmerston. The Kilmog is a hard road, much holed, but tho new surface on the next hill, Mt. Cargill, makes it an easv climb. The gang is still working on the top of this hill, and notices attract the attention of motorists to the fact that caution is here necessary, because of the road being under repair. However, Mt. Cargill with its atrocious surface, has disappeared. On my return, the actual travelling time was nine and a half hours, in a light car. This may guide some in their arrangements. The Dunedin traffic authorities are to bo commended on their handling of the extra traffic, and the new highway to the Exhibition, which by the way is a one way road, is a credit, to the City. A large official parking place is situated near the main entrance, where for a nominal charge cars may bo parked during tho visit to tho big show.

In closing, • I wish fo state that my reason for this letter is an attempt to repay some of the debt that I personally owo to "Roadster" for the useful information given from time to tinio in tho columns of "The Press."
