Obituary. Mr William Anderson, of Bivcrside, died on "Wednesday evening, aged 58 years. The deceased, who had resided in the district for the past 30 years, •was highly respected by all who knew him. He was born in. Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1867, and came to New Zealand with his parents in 1879. Mr Anderson's father was engaged in farming in the Loeston district. After removing to Riverside. Mr Anderson interested himself in public body work, and had been a member of the Wakanui Bond Board for the past 14 years, in addition to being chairman of the River Board and treasurer of the Wakanui Defence' Eifle Club. He had been in indifferent health for the past few months. He leaves a widow, three sons, and three daughters. The Weather. A most beneficial rain fell throughout the Ashburton County on Wednesday night, 97 points, accompanied by one degree of frost being registered at the Domain weather station at 0 a.m. yesterday. The morning broke fine, but the sky became clouded about 10 o'clock, when loud peals of thunder were heard overhead. Heavy showers of hail and rain foil alternately through the remainder of the day. At the fortnightly meeting of the Hakatere Lodge, No. 68, 1.0.0. F., the N.G., Bro. H. Preston, presided. It was decided to hold oyer until after Christmas the proposal to hold a ritual competition. One new member was proposed. Bro. E. New briefly addressed the members on dispensary matters, as a result of which a number of shares were taken up. The Christmas Tree Committee reported that the arrangements were well in hand. In response to an invitation from the Advance Ashburton, Association, about 20 residents of Oak Grove assembled at the south-west corner last evening to discuss methods of improving the appearance of the Grove. Several members of the A.A.A., headed by the chairman of the Works and Beautifying Committee, Mr H. L. Parker, were present. It was decided to recommend the A.A.A. to construct a walk up the centre of the Grove between tho oak trees. Several residents expressed their willingness to assist with the maintenance of the Grove, and Mr M. Knox offered the use of his traction engine to remove the old tree stumps. New Baptist Church. The foundation stone of the new Baptist Church, which is in course of erection at the corner of Havelock and Casa streets, will be laid by his | Honour Mr Justice Adams, on December I sth. At the ceremony, addresses will be given by the Hon. W. Nosworthy, the Mayor (Mr E. Galbraith), and the Eevs. J. J. North and M. W. P. Las- | celles (secretary of the New Zealand Baptist Union).

Mothers' Union; The president (Mrs E. Galbraith) presided over a good attendance of the Ashburton branch of tho Mothers' Union yestesday afternoon. Mrs W. G. Boberts, of Christchurch, gave an interesting address on the work of the Union throughout the world, stating that the membership now totalled 428,000. She made an earnest appeal to the local branch to increase its membership, and said that in the Christchurch Diocese there were now 1650 members, the largest of any branch in New Zealand. She read a very interesting description of the official, opening of the Mary Sumner House in Westminster, London. She was accorded a vote of thanks for her visit and address. It was decided to make a donation to St. Stephen's vestry for the use of the hall. Mall Notices. Cordner be appointed to fill the vacancy on the Board caused by the death of the late Mr A. J. Masson.
