• It is recently reported from Xemuro, Hokkaido, in Japan, that bears are increasing so rapidly in [turup, the largest island in the Kurile group, that the inhabitants are seriously considering appealing to the Japanese Government for aid. It is variously estimated that there are now between 8000 and 10,000 bears on the islaiid. Hundreds of horses and cattle are killed and eaten by the bears -yearly, it is said. Unless somethipg is done to exterminate the bruins,, it , k is ; feared stock farming, on the island "will havp to be discontinued. A-bounty of-Iw yen is given at present for each bear killed. Climbers of Mount Everest have found many signs of animal and insect life at very high altitudes. Wild slieep have been: found sitting on a glacier -surrounded by pinnacles of ice. At 21.000 ft bees and moths were found. Four thousand .feet above the last vegetable growth' were spiders. There v ere no other animals or signs of vegetation near-.them, and for food they ate one another
