Sir. I have read with surprise the details of the alterations in the Law Entrance Examination as set out m your columns, and later amended by Mr T. W. liowe. The article in your issue was "the first intimation I had that anv change had been made, but having now perused the regulations I would call your attention to the injustice and lack of consideration given'to certain students by those who have drafted the alterations. The regulations are unjust, because a student who is credited with any law subject must take Jurisprudence, Constitutional History, and English up to 'LL.B. standard and Latin to LL.B. ana B.A. standard; before 1929 Or hj« will lose all the-subjects that the University at, present says that he has pa6s£d in- A student who has passed the major part of the examination wilL then have to start dl over again. Hie new student cannot now sit for any Law subject till he passes the new General Knowledge Examination, so why artthe present students to lose subjects tbey T have already passed if they

find it. impossible to comply with the new conditions within that time ' There has been a lack of consideration for senior students because those who matriculated without Latin are mow asked to attain a higher standard in Latin than the law student who has entered and passes this year* matriculation. The latter student will l-e deemed to have passed his General Knowledge Examination while the former will not, even though he may havo passed the matriculation with higher marks but have taken French as a otibifct instead of Latin. At present the student is allowed to sit tor Latin alone, but why has this been taken away.- 1 Such a student will have to sit for four additional subjects to LL.B. instead of Matriculation Latin. 'lhe entries for the matriculation closed on Oatoler 11th. while the new regulations were gazetted <-n October 2£th. Therefore any .student who is riowable to sit for the Matriculation Latin is no \v debarred front obtaining his General Knowledge I'ixanimation. There are students who, like the writer, took the Law subjects lirst and are now under penalty. Iho University ha.s endeavoured to he;i» the older student by granting the Provisional Matriculation, and in the ease of married men with families residing in towns where there is no University and where such men have had long exi>erience in legal offices, such ©revision has proved a great boon and has been an inducement for such men to help themselves. The effect of the new regulations in such cases will prove disastrous. Men iu positions such as I ruu e mentioned have naturally turned to the Law subjects first, r.nd' this has been done, with the concurrence of tho , University. Surely under such circiunstnnces the alteration without warning seems to.be. a breach of good faith. I trust you will join your valued help to bring these patent defects before the proper authorities and the public and th; t other students in this position will Toiee their objections aUo.—Yours, etc., '

CONVEYANCER, Oamaru, November 2-1 th.

A QUERY.

TO TUB EDITOR OR "THE PRESS." Sir,:—The Governor-General in his address to the school children this week in Dunedin, described the late Queen Alexandra as a tall woman. 1 mentioned this to-day to a friend not long from Home, and she said positively Sir Charles Fergusson was wrong, as she had seen her laie and she was not tall in any sense. I didn't like to contradict a lady, and it seems strange the GdVernor-General should be iu error on such a matter. Could an>'. of your readers say who is right —Yours, etc., COCKNEY. November, 23th.
