NEW POTATOES. <BT*CIAL TO "THI FIII9.") AUCKLAND, November 24. Pukekohe advices state that the market for new potatoes has registered a sharp advance, up to 20s per cwt f.o.r. Pukekohe, as against 16s and 17b at the beginning of last week. The rise is attributed to the scarcity of supplies during the" last few days, the bare market in Auckland at the beginning of last week being followed by a bare market in Wellington towards the end. The price at Wellington went up to 28s por cwt at auction for the few available lots. Over the week-end orders were received at Pukekohe in a big rush. The rise in price is resulting in increased digging activity, and this afternoon supplies were coming forward more freely. Jt is expected that by Thursday or Friday there will be enough potatoes on hand to fill orders promptly.

PLEA FOR PROTECTION. Giving evidence at a Board of Trade Enquiry in London in support of an amplication by the aluminium ware industry for protection under the Safeguarding of Industries Regulations, a manufacturer said that the only place- where they were holding tbeir own against German competition was in those markets (Australia and New Zealand) where they were given a preference. "I may add," ho said, "that they show signs of getting tired' of sheltering an industry which we ourselves do not shelter." EGG AUCTION. Messrs Harris Bros., Ltd., report that at their usual weekly auction of Feather Brand guaranteed fresh eggs, the supply was not equal to the demand, consequently prices advanced, and were all sold at the following rates:.—Hen eggs, Ist grade (Uoza or over), Is 9d; hen eggs, 2nd grade (under 2oza), Is Bd. —7 REILLY'S (DUNEDIN) TELEGRAPHED MARKET REPORT.
