Barnard (s) ; A. W. Parsons, J. Stanley, W. 0. Taylor, W. T. I'oster (s). The Pictures. "Tho Bridge of Sighs," starring Dorothy Mackail, is the chief attraction at the Harbour Light Theatre this afternoon and evening. The supporting programme includes a comedy, gazette, and tho twelfth episode of "The Iron Man." To-morrow "The Meddler," featuring Wm. Desmond, will bo screened, together with two comedies, a gazette, and a further episode of "Phantom Fortune." Utilising Reclamation Area. The reclamation area of 70 acres beyond the western'mole, which the dredge Canterbury completed filling iu some months ago, will soon bo put into use. Already arrangements have been made by one big oil company to obtain a lease of land near the Cattle Jetty on which to build oil storage tanks, and it is probable that other companies will follow suit. Thero is also a proposal in hand by the Harbour Board to beautify the area by forming a chain-wide road right around it, to servo as a marine parade. Inside the road will be planted a belt of trees to serve as a break-wind, and tho land immediately inside that again will bo cut up into building sections. At the western end of the area a block, of seven acres has been set aside as a sports ground. Cr. Morris, who is keenly interested in the matter, got a motion put through at Monday night's meeting of the Council, authorising himself, together with tho chairman of works. (Cr. T. Hempstalk), and the borough engineer (Air H. H. BarBard), to commence putting soil on the area, with a view of having one football ground at least ready by next season. Cr. Morri3 mentioned that a good deal of adverse comment had been made as to tho impossibility of growing any vegetation on tho reclaimed area. In reply to this, he said that a few potatoes, planted haphazard, had made a wonderful growth, and would yield better than potatoes grown in his own garden.

Harbour Light Theatre. There was a well-filled houso at the Harbour Light Theatre last evening, when the Denis Kehoe Company produced the wellknown comedy-drama, "Mother Machree." "Mother Machree," which was recently .staged in Chrislcliurch by the samo company, is a simple story of much charm. The scene is laid in County Clare in tho period o£ 1805, and tho story tells of tho poor Irish family, the O'Connors, persecuted by the villainous steward of the estate of a mostly absentee English landlord with a title. Denis Kehoe, as Shamus O'Connor, the scapegraco son who eventually returns to frco his old mother from the clutches of the steward, won his way into instant favour with tho audience, who were delighted with bis singing of Irish ballads, to his own accompaniments played with the Irish harp. Miss Frances Kayher, as Rose O'Dare, the sister of the English Lord, acted charmingly, and looked most bewitching in long curls and the long dress of the period. Miss Helen Fej-gus, as Mrs O'Connor ("Mother Machree"), played u difficult role in a most commendablo manner. Others who assisted materially in tho success of the play were Miss Gwcu Dorisc as the pretty Trish colleen, Moira O'Connor, Mr Tom Buckley as Father Pat, Miss Aline Dunn as the garrulous Mrs O'Malley, and Mr Lester Carey as Fergus Stone, tho aforesaid villainous steward. The staging of "Mother Machree" was good, apd the enterprise of the management of tho Harbour Light Theatre in securing a play of this standard for Lyttelton is to be commended. ** Funeral.
