NORTH CANTERBURY.

—• — i RANGIORA. A meeting of th.o Bowling Club Committee lield en Saturday evening, Mr 0. H. Hargravcs being in the chair. T. W. Ambrose was elected to represent the club in the annual match between Canterbury and fsoufh Canterbury, at Timaru, on Pc-embcr "d-h, with W. K. Barton as substitute. The secretary reported (hat entries for the championship games were: Singles --', pairs 17. aDd rinks 8. The bi-monthly meeting of the Ashley Educational institute was held in the District School on Saturday. Mr A. J. T. Withers presiding. Two protests were considered, one with reference to sick leave, and the other with reference to house allowance, 'it was resohed to reply to queries from the X.Z.E.I, auc! the Canterbury Board of Education, that the teachers' library comprised -0 volumes, tJiat.it was housed in the Rangiora school, and that, it was free to members. Mr Morland, the secretary of the Sports Committee, reported th3*t if fine it was intended to have the children's district sports at Kaiapoi next Friday. The entries were very large, and Mr L. G. Taylor's tenders for the supply of soft drinks, icecreams, and refreshments had been accepted. A Protest Committee, consisting of Messrs Morland, Denne, 6'Donaghuc, and Withers, was appointed. HANMER SPRINGS. A dance promoted by the Cricket Club was held on Friday night. For other than a. holiday a. surprisingly large number attended, who were provided with a most enjoyable evening's entertainment, the financial results of which exceeded expectations. The artistic decorations were the work of Mrs Hodges and helpers. A dainty supper was provided. Kxtras were contributed by the Sunshine Band under the conductorship of Miss Corkill. No doubt shearing operations prevented the Waiau Bush Cricket team from visiting Hanmer on Saturday to fulfil their engagement with the locpl plavers. to whom tho game goes by default. The afternoon was devoted to a practice game by the latter, as were the two previous Saturday afternoons, when the competition was suspended owing to the holidays. Last week was ono of dry conditions, and a predominance of nor'-westers. A promise of rain on Saturday night end-d-1 up with a light shower. Rain would be welcome for the gardens and root crops. Arrangements to advertise Hanmer at the Dunedin Exhibition are now being made. To finance the schenie a sum of monev was subscribed locally, which is behW subsidised £ for £ by the Progress League, and the Health Deuartment. A pamphlet is being printed with views and information concerning this resort, which will be distributed at the Health Department's court.

AMBERLEY. A very successful concert was given at Ambevley' on Saturday by a party organised by Mr C. S. Thomas, from the members of the Christchurch Caledonian Society. Prior to the commencement of the concert, Pipe-Major Shanahan played the Lament owing to the death of "the Queen Mother. The opening item was a selection on the bagpipes by Pipe-Major Shanahan. A varied and excellent programme followed, items being given by Miss S. Down (songs), Miss Doris Bell Scottish dances), Mr Neil Down (songs), Mr Bracev Wilson (songs), Mr Campbell Brown (recitations), Mr Hubbard (conjuring and sleight of hand). Tho accompanist was Mr Robb. CUST. ■ The Cricket Club- had, Loburn visitors on Saturday. 'Hie home team batted first and scored 58, to which every member contributed a little, Smith and Arthur Gartory getting double figures. Bennett, Motheral, and Croft were difficult to play and divided the wickets. Loburn scored 79 for eight wickets. Smith, and Parker were the, highest scorers, and Smith was most successful with the ball. EYRETON. The junior A cricket team journeyed to Oxford on Saturday to play the local junior team, but as Oxford could not muster a team they defaulted. As some of the seniors were present. Eyreton played juniors and seniors mixed in a friendly game. Eyreton won by 28 runs. Scores: —Eyreton 119 (G. Saunders 3'J, H. Bennett 24, R. Bennett 15, A. Smith 11). ' Oxford 91 (Moore 24, H. Feary 33, C. Brown. 13, Grant 10). Bowling for Eyreton, H. Bennett took four wickets for 20, and Allan Smith two for 19. For Oxford, H. Fcary took seven for 28. OHOKA. Mr Lord's farm has been sold to Mr Geo. Moorhcad, of Methven. Much interest is taken by the school children in training for tho sports of the combined North Canterbury Schools on Friday. As the winners of several events at last year's sports arc- still-at school, the Olioka children have high hopes of winning the championship for which they made a bold bid last year.

LADBROOKS. | Mr J. Brown, who is in the Public Hospital, is progressing favourably after his recent operation. Mrs J. "Walker (Norscwood), Mr W. A. Trask, and Miss L. McKinnon (Whangarci) are paying a, vis't- to Mr and Mrs T. Trask. A number of Broadficlds friends paid a, surprise visit to the residence of_Mr and Mrs G. G. Smith. Cards, dancing, | and games were indulged in. Messrs Hubbard and Hunt were appointed to wait upon the Chief Postmaster with regard to a local delivery. SWANNANOA. i The Cricket Club had Horrelvillc B as visitors on Saturday. Horrelvillo batted first and made- 160 by consistent scoring, Patterson, Creamer, "Whitte, and Horrell being mainly responsible. The home side did not make such ai «ood showing, but managed to piny out , time, and secure a draw. They scored i.7 for M?vcn wickets.

HORORATA. One of the most important evenfs in the history ot" Hororata took place last Fridiiv evening in tho Hall, when a social was hold to celebrate tbo switching on of t.ho eld-trie current. The hall was inadequate to accommodate all those who attended. The Tower Board's men under the supervision of Mr Taylor, had illuminated the hall with 'Jen lights, and these together with multicoloured streamers gave an effect very guv and pleasing. Mr H.Oliver presided, 1,.' with Mr .1. T>. Hall being the districts'representatives on iho Malvern Electric Power Board. Until 0 o'clock the hall was illuminated by the old oil lamps. The social part of the evening comprised a concert as follows :■ Overture, Glenatu Band; song, Mr Eidgen: song, Mrs Bailey; song, Mr Morlaml; song, Mr Fclton. Tine, cliairinan apologised for the absence of Sir Heaton Rhodes and Mr Robert Eeid. Mr .Tudd spoko on hehalf of the Malvern Electric. Tower Board, of which ho is chairman, and gave details of the progress of tho workin the country districts. Ho then called on Mrs Tl. Oliver to switch on the light. Mr J. D. Hall spoko on the uses of electricity, and the history ot the ' scheme. Mr I). Jones also congratulated tho district on obtaining the light. Mr G. HalT, who represented the Sehvyn County Council, gave an appropriate speech. The chairman thanked all those who had helped in any way to inako the cctenjony such a success. Supper was served, and the hall was cleared for dancing: excellentmusic being supplied bv the Clenatu Band. The series of euchre tournaments held under tho auspices of the Plunket Society, and organised bv Mrs T. B. .Jones and Mrs (I. V. Dcrrett. were brought to a close last week. The following- were the prize-winners: Ladies, Mrs H. Oliver Ist. Mrs J. Keltic 2nd, Miss Poll Oliver 3rd; gentlemen, Mr Hamilton Ist, Mr Myers 2nd, Mr McKenzie 3rd. The boobv prizes went to ■Miss M. "Wright and Mr J. Keltic. Agftrecate prizes were awarded to Miss Poll Oliver and Mr A. McKenzic.
