ANTARCTIC EXPLORER.
REVISITS CIIRISTCHURCH. "■> | Colonel C. H. Meares, who, in tho course of an eventful and interesting career, was a member of the expedition to the Antarctic with Captain R. F-J Scott, K.N., arrived in Christchurcli yesterday morning in company with Mrs Meares. During the early days of the War, Colonel jleares served in Franco with the Seventh Division, later being engaged in special war service, and with the Naval Air Force. At the declaration of peace he was Naval Air Attache in Rome. At the termination of lus duties there, lie settled in Cannes, in sunny Southern Fratiee —a country lie loves'—and he is surprised that there is an opinion that strained terms exist between England and! France. "I never found anything but the warmest regard for England," he said, "whatever an occasional newspaper or politician may have said. True, there is a feeling of" disappointment that England and America will not guarantee the security of France from European aggression. The last thing France desires is to be involved in a European conflict. As for lighting England—and it has been said that tho increase in the-French air service is directed at England —it is as bizarre an idea as a war between England and Scotland."
Colonel Meares was very anxious to see the Scott statue illuminated. It was one of, his objects in coming to C'hristchurch—that, and meeting old friends again. < Colonel Meares hopes to be in Christchurch until after the November Race Meeting. Then bo will visit Australia before he returns to France.
