DEEP X-RAY TREATMENT.

DUNEDIN COMMENT

(special to "the pkess."; DUNEDIN, October 29. A new use for deep X-ray treatment through an open wound in a case where a surgeon decided it was too dangerous to proceed with an operation was reported by Dr. P. C. Feuwick to the North Canterbury Hospital Board at Christchurch. At Ihinedin this morning. Dr. A. S. Moody, to- whom tbe subject was mentioned, said ho thought such an operation quite a feasible thing. Hp did not, however, attach too much importance to it. - Probably the case referred to was a localised growth. Danger to skin could bo obviated to a great extent by the use of a harder ray. Hard radium rays and hard X-rays had practically t,ho same action. That, he was that Dr. Fenwick was referring to. He thought a good radiologist could protect the skin sufficiently to treat any growth at any distance from the surface.

Dr. C. C. Anderson, radiologist at Dunedin Hospital, said no such operation had been performed locally or was it likely .to bo attempted until the new and. more powerful X-ray plant, which the Hospital Board was obtaining was in position in the new buildings to bp erected. No doubt the Christchurch case was the first of its kind to be dealt with in such a way. The matter opened up the- field for investigation. btit up to the present, very little had been done in regard to such a method of treatment, and he did not attach very much importance to it.
