FARMING IN U.S.A.
The "New York Times" of December 14th, 1924, has a remarkable article on tho growth of mortgages pn farm lands iri America. la the course of this article tie "Times" drew attention to the fact that the farming community were manifestly in a bad way from a financial point of view. It seems that during four years pf Prohibition tho great primary industries of America associated with agriculture had brought much distress to the farming community. Since 1919 farm mortgages have doubled to 1781 millions of dollars, and are still rising. Writing from New York State on December 9th of the same year, Mr Loren N. Wood wrote: own a farm in Redwood Valley North Dakote, where • probably the soil ia as good as anywhere in the United States. Two years ago I purchased 28 head of Shorthorns at 32 dollars a head. We have kept them on good pastures for two years, feeding them-on hay- and some com for two winters, and about a month ago picked out the. six best, put them in the barn and farce-fed them, and then shipped these six to the market at St. Paul. Yesterday 1 received the proceeds. _ After payment of freight "and commission charges tbe net amount received was 28 doQara a head—4 dollars less than I paid for t lie in."
Prohibition: has not brought prosperity to tie farmers it lias only brought prosperity and easy money to the bootlegger and Prohibition enforcement agents who started in after Prohibition uith nothing, and are now mOHonaircß. Farmers in New Zealand will do -wefl to consider the position. Their produce is measured in the world's market. If the voluntary revenue received from the people by the licensed trade is abolished the taxation most be prut upon land, income, or the commodities in general use. The safest course to pursue is to avoid increased taxation fay striking out tho two bottom lines cm your ballot paper. Advt.
