NORTH CANTERBURY.
KAIKOUSA. The annual ball of tlio Kaikoura Football, Club tvas a very pleasant gathering.- The hall was gaily decorated with the club colouurs, lanterns, and evergreens. An excellent supper "wp.s served by the ladies in the supper room. Music, was (supplied iby .Mrs Rey Clark: (piano), Messrs C. Ogden (violin), and A. S. Robinson (cornet). Mr C. "NV.. Beeves • acted-' as M.C. A severe- frost was- experienced ort Tuesday nighty which did considerable damage to early potatoes, " tomatoes, and other' tender crops. "Wednesday was a bright, sunny day, but there was a heavy coating of enow'on the mountains. MASON'S .FLAT. . At the cuchro party and dance organised by the school committee in aid of the school picnic, fund, the prizes were won by Mrs Leary, Miss Annie C'rean, Mr Earl, and Mr R, Boon.' A dainty supper was provided by the ladies. The rest of the evening was spent in dancing, the music-for which was supplied by Mr F. AVrighfc. Extras ".vei'c- played by Miss Mary White and Mi.is Pearce. Mr Lance Wright was M.C. Mr White, chairman, of the school 1 , committee,' thanked the ladies who provided the supper and all others who' had helped to make the social a success. ' SEFTON. The monthly meeting of the Sefton. W.C.T.U. was held in the Presbyterian Schoolroom on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs P. J. Thorne presiding. There was a poor attendance. Business was i discussed and afternoon tea was dispensed at the close of the meeting. • GREENDALE. A very successful "No-licetisc'' banquet. organised by the Revs. o.'Burnet and F. Jones,. Messrs C. H. Adams, J. Rudd, and Gilbert Adams, was held in the Orange Hall. There was an attendance of over 60, and the Rev. 0. Burnet presided. Amongst the visitors were the Rev. W. A. Hay, of Christcliurch, and Mr Geo. Shipley, a member of the No-jicense Council, and Mrs Shipley, of Harewood. After full justice had: been done to the bountiful supply of ■ good things provided by the ladies, a number of toasts were honoured, and songs were contributed by Miss A. -Shipley arid Mr E. Ridgen" the accompanists" being Mr H. Partridge and Mrs E. Ridgeai. A vote of i nanks to all who had assisted at the banquet was' moved by Mr F. H. Musgrove and carried by acclamation. ■ SWANNANOA. In the ladies' tennis ladder matches, much improved form was shown by several of the younger pl a y e rs who have climbed further up. The following is the ladder : _l, Miss R. LEITHFIELD. At a cuchro tournament and dance held in the Leithiield Hall', the prizes, given by Mr J. D. MeKellar and' Mr H. May, were -won l>v Mrs E. Davis (Opawa) and Mr T. Lukey, the consolation awards going to - Mrs W. Jamiesou and Mr L. Morris. The music, for- the danco was provided by Mrs F. Trail, while Mr W. Jamieson carried out the duties of M.C. HORORATA. At' the annual meeting of the Horticultural Society, the following officers were elected:—Patron, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes; president, Mr G. Grigs?; vicepresidents, Messrs H. Oliver, H. M. Reeves, L. Acland, T. Jarman, J. HockridgC; E. Clucas, Mesdames J. D. Hall and G. C. Derrett; committee, Mc-ssrs W. Page, L. Hight, G. Cartwright, 1.-. Mooar, A. J. Harris, Mesdames W. Page, Timmins, J. 'MeHugh, and R. Gray. Mr E. Jekyll was' appointed lion, secretary. It was decided to; hold the show at the end of February. A cottage garden competition is to be started, provided sufficient entries are received,' a substantial prize having been promised. Slight alterations have been made to the schedule, which it is hoped will be an improvement to the show. The society is also offering a points cup for competition. ! The weather is fine, but cold at nights. Quite a few frosts have been experienced, which have played havoc with some of the gardens. There is a good growth of green feed and root crops are coming on well.
