TURF GOSSIP. Acceptances for the Timaru T.C.'s Spring Sleeting close to-morrow. Nominations for tlio West Australian Trotting Association's Christmas Meeting closo to-day. NORTH CANTERBURY CLUB. COUNT CAVOUR IN FORM. The North Canterbury Racing Club's Annual Meeting was held at RangioTa yesterday, but tho weather was cold and miserable, and the rain which fell during tho early pari, of tho programme no doubt prevented many people from attending. The track was in excellent order, and fast times were registered in several of tho events. Count Cavour's win in the principal event was a very popular one, and after the race the president of the club, Mr C. D. van Asch, presented Mr J. S. Barrett with the handsome trophy attached to the stake, congratulating the owner on tho possession of ench a fine horse, and_ hoping- that further successes would come his way. The only unpleasant incident in the day's proceedings was the disqualification for jralloping of Koraki, who finished second in tho two-mile trot. Speculation was brisk, and though several of tlm fields were below tho average in numbers tho sum of £18,048 was put through the machine, as against £19,105 last year. There was the large field of seventeen in the High-weight Handicap, but the class represented was not particularly good. The race, however, served to introduce a moat promising three-year-old filly in Windshield, who gave F. D. Jones his first win since his reinstatement. Windshield capably handled by C. Emerson, was always in a handy position, and at the finish "won meat convincingly. Tho ,second 'horse. Royal Despatch, is a cast-of! from Mr Knight's stable, and ho ran a good race, defeating tho remainder very comfortably. Goldspinner was reckoned to have a gcod chance, but her rider, F. C. Porter, lost his Beat as the field jumped away. Enare showed speed at one stage of the race, and is evidently in good form. In the Trial Plate there were many green horses, but Mr McNab managed to get them away to a good start. The race was looked on as a certainty for Celerity 11., a most attractive looking filly imported from England by Messrs Chisholm and McDonald, who own that great sprinter Glentruin. Celerity 11. certainly beat little of class, but the manner in -which she did her work suggests a, bright future for her. She was really never extended. Grey Eyes, one of tho well-backed division, was never dangerous, and second place was filled by the outsider. Gay Queen, who is trained by F. P. Claridge, who also turned out the second place-getter in the onening event. Waikaia ran a good race, and others to whom the cxperienca of racing will be helpful include Glenalmond by Bonnv Glen— Prim, and Silver Cord by Sunny Lake— Concordia.

The Rangiova Cup was resnonsible for a most impressive performance by the favourite, Count Cavour, who, always nirely p'accd, found the. warm pace set by Rapier and Ferino to • his liking, and lie won very easily at the finish. The Solferi'no gelding looked really well and in nice condition to finish off his preparation for the New .Zealand City. Deucalion finished at ac great pace, and it appeared that had he not been .kept eo far from the leaders in the early part he would havo finished much closer to the winner. He is in good nick and through his display earned a number of friends for his big race next month. Ferino and Rapier made the pace a cracker, but were not seen over the last few furlongs, while Jubilant came with a fast late run.

%'he field was unwieldy in tlio View Hill Handicap Trot, and the displays of n>oet of tho competitors were far from impressive. At the end of a mile Ashley Dillon was in front, and pacing resolutely lie won in impressive style from Koraki, who indulged in a good deal of galloping through the race, with the result that this position was taken away from ihim lawarded to Yoicks, who -Was a farm favourite, but lost ground at the start. Prologue, Erins Royal, Bittern, and Routine went well for a mili, but are evidently not of good class.

Horsemanship played a big part in the decision of the Oxford Hack Handicap, and wa& really a victory for 'the ability of C. Emerson on His Majesty. While the pace wa-H 6olid His Majesty was never hurried, and when it came to racing Emerson really lifted ' his mount along. Grey Lass and Goosestep were the only two ever dangerous once tho straight was reached, the latter getting a narrow verdict. Youte started smartly, but failed to race on.

The Flying Handicap saw the downfall of a hot favourite in Finora, whose rider appeared to make too much "use of her in the middle stages, and did not handle the turn into the straight at all well. When challenged 'by Ayrburn she made a poor response and was beaten by a najrow margin. Economist looked in need of a race, ajid ho should ran well next time out. Considering that he commenced slowly he put up a great raco, to finish so close to the leaders.

Tho Welter Handicap proved the best ot good things for, En Route, who allowed Yiswpoint and Will Oakland to make the pace to the straight, when ho went to the front- and t was never .afterwards troubled, winning like a champion. Prince Charelroi had none tho best of the luck at the start, and in gaining second honours put -up a good performance. He may be looked to do even better in tho near future. Viewpoint was always well up, but Zaragoza's finishing effort was a bit disappointing, and Will Oakland faded out after three furlongs had been covered. N The Ashley Trot, of . one mile, ?aw High Jinks sent out a very -warm favourite, but it was only after a very hard tussle with Awamba that'he landed'the big end of the purse. High Jinks, though a winner, is not a high-class pacer at present, but should improve. Yen, for once, started correctly, but faded out once tho. real racing commenced. General Thorpe andi Fanoy Pointer both went solidly, and may bo expected to do better later on,

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TXLIGRAV.) WELLINGTON, October 26. The. "Wellington Spring Meeting ■was coniluded at Treutham, before a very lar?e attendance. Though it did not actually rain, the cold wind and light misty showers Avere enough to make the day an unpleasant one. The racing again was of a very high standard, and some exciting' contests were witnessed. The Champion Plate only drew a field of four, but. the finish between Bunny mads and Te Kara v; as one of tic best ever seen in a race. The latter scored after a ding-dong go up the straight. Phcenix Park was successful in the Pearce Handicap, after being one of the leading division all the way. A surprise was in store in the Na-inai Handicap, for the imported horse Grand Knight took charge two iurlongs from heme and won meritoriously. For the meeting the tota'.isator was down £l5O. NOTES ON THE RACING. Fourteen went to the post lor the Second Hurdle Handicap, for which Merry Singer w«3 favourite, with <ftly a slight call over Eonmark and Sir Fanciful. Red Head, Askan, and Santiago were the best backed of the others. Captain Sarto and Axle were the early leadera, and going along- the back to far turn Merry Singer, Eonmark, Askari, and Sir Fanciful were their nearest attendants. Red Head then made a forward move, and turning for home he was disputing the lead with Sir Fanciful, after whom, at the last fence, came Eonmark, Merry Singer, Askari, and Santiago. Sir Fanciful soon shook Red Head o£f, but Eonmark stuck to his work gamely, and in a punishing finish beat Sir Fanciful home by half a head. Red Head was two lengths away third with Santiago, Merry Singer, and Askftri next. Frisco Moil fell half a mile from home, and Gamecock fell over him. ■ Tho bracket, Catcall and Mmotus, were solid favourites for the Spring Trial Stakes ffom Our Jack, The Thorn, Serotina, M.v Hobby, and Llandudno. Serotina and Kiloriim were the first out, but tho latter soon lost her position, the order when tho field settled down being Serotina, Sashara, Llandudno, Royal Mint, -Mindtus, and The Thorn. Serotina and Llandudno were first into the straight from The Thorn and Oreum. Catcall and Philanderer also improved their positions at the bend, and n't the distance tho former tackled The Thorn, and went on to win by three-quarters of a length. Kilorum finished on well, but was still three lengths behind The Thorn, at the post. Both Serotina and Philanderer faded out in the last quarter, and My Hobby, Royal Mint, Our Oreum, and Llandudno finished immediately behind the placed horses. Tho hotting between Subjection, Killocli, Kilmiss, and Indian Sage for the Tararua Handicap was very even, followed at an interval by Closefire. Dubious, anl Alt Style. Kilmiss, Agitato, All Style, and Salamis wcro the leaders when tho field settled down, and Indian Sage and Subjection joined them before the far bend was reached. The order into tho straight was Kilmiss. Subjection. Indian Sage, All Style, and Dubious. All Style mado strenuous efforts to catch the leader from the distance, but failed to do so by half a length. Closefiro whs about two and a half lengths behind All Style, and deprived Mountain Top of third money by a narrow margin. Modern. Dubious, Indian Sage, and Subjection were the next to finish. There was a lot of money for Joy King in the Roseneath Handicap, and ho wound up a warm favourite from Bachelor, Limited, the bracket Note and Spode, and Ventigern, with Kiosk, Kilperon, and Limonite the outsiders. With a furlong covered Limited and Kiosk were clear of the field, and tho latter worried Limited out of the major dividend, winning by a neck. Joy King and Bachelor «.were prominent at tho distance, where Note put in an appearance, and beat them for third money, about two lengths and a half behind Limited. Tho winner had run A fair race in the Wellesley Stakes on Saturday, hut was allowed to pay a dividend of nearly a quarter of a century. Bachelor again raced green, but he will do better on the top of tho ground. There was not a great margin sepp.rating Suggestion, Fool's Paradise, and Tresham, the main fancies for the Pearce Handicap, with Olympic the best backed of the others. It was n particularly interesting race. Kaili was first out, and with a furlong covered was clear of Quest, Fool's Paradise, and Lucius. Lucius, Printemps, Phasnix Park, and Fool's Paradise, and Suggestion followed Kaiti into the straight, and_ they all challenged at the distance. Kaiti was soon beaten, and Phoenix Park and Lucius drew out, the former just getting there by a nose, with Fool's Paradise three-quarters of a length away third, very little in advance of Suggestion, Zouave, and Kaiti. Phoanix Park takes some Tiding, but he must be considered amongst light weights in the New Zealand Cup. The Champion Plate field was reduced to Runnymede, Rapine, Te Kara, and Royal Divorce, and in that order they were backed. Royal Divorce got a little* the worst of the start, and Runnymfcde, at a slow pace, took up the miming from Te Kara. Royal Divorce ran up to Te Kara along the back, but the latter left him, and joined Runnymede at the five-furlong mark. They were on terms turning for home, and in a stirring finish Te Kara won by half a head. Rapine •was four lengths away third, a similar distance in front of Royal Divorce. Te Kara was an improved, horse, after his first day's racing, and he will be a better horse still on New Zealand Cap day. The three-year-old Runnymede looks like being a stayer, but the race to-day did not give a real indication of his ability in this direction, there being no pace on until five furlongs from home. Rapine and Royal Divorce should be better horses in the autumn.

In a tig pool for the Nainai Handicap Ilka was a good favourite from Orchid, Ladyfingers, Deluge, and Degage, all carrying over four figures, with Grand Knight earrying IeES than 200 tickets. Orchid, Delnge, Ladyfingers, and Orand Knight were prominent early, but running on to the course proper Ilka was in charge from Ladyfiugers and Sir Pam. Then Orchid and Grand Knight camo again, the latter winning well by two lengths from Orchid, with

Ilka another three lengths away, followed bv Father O'Flynn, Degage, Sir Pam, Star Ranger and Hipo. The winner was recently taken on lease by Mr V. Riddiford from his brother, and from the way in which he won should go on to even better tilings. Ilka did not stay on, but Orchid was putting in good work over the last quarter. Star Ranger's prominence at the finish will reinstate him in favour for some o£ the longer distance races at Cup time.

Ring the Bell and Bisox were the popular selections for the Kuahine Handicap, and then at a fair interval came First Acre. Penman, and the bracket Piquant and Nadarino. Nadarino, Bisox, and Sleet broke the line quickly from a good start, but coming into the course proper The Bolter was in charge from Nadarino, Ring the Bell, Horomea, Bisox, Sleet, and Birthmark, all being iri close order. Then Ring the Bel!, Birthmark, nud Pangolin drew out. only to be challenged quickly ty Piquant and Horomea, and in a very fine finish half heads separated the placed horses. First Acre finished fourth, with Ring the Bell and Nadarino next.

BLACK ADMIRAL IN FORM. (SrECIAX, TO "TH£ PRESS.") OAMARU, October 06. The weather conditions were not very pleasant for' the Oainaru Trotting Club's Spring Meeting to-day, for though, the sky was clear and the sun was shining, there was a bitterly cold southerly vsind blowing all day. It was nit only unpleasant for the spectators, but made matters very trying for the competitor?. There was a good attendance, the special trains from both North and South bringing a fair number of passengers. The racing was of a good standard, and the totalisator investments were £>2,111 10s. as compared with £21,932 103 lest year. NOTES ON THE RACING. The Improvers' Handicap was rather a poor race, as several of the competitors made mistakes at various stages. Kelman did not strike his gait well at the start, but Sid AVilkes was quickly in" a good position.' and taking the lead before half the distance had been covered, was not afterwards headed, SJieila Wilkes looked like threatening danger in the straight, but left her feet under pressure, and Rid Wilkes scored rather comfortably. Pallas AVilkes was a poor third. It is worthy of note that, all j three placed horses are by Marvin AVilkes, i and that sire had yet another representative j in Marvin Drift, who, however, could make no impression on those in front of him. The winner was ridden a good raco by T. AVallis, who has won this season with Lazarus and Burnie. two other trotters. Lingfield. the thr»eyear-old filly by Author Dillon from Gianella, was made a good favourite for the Trial Handicap, but she did not settle to her work kindly in the early stages, and breaking badly at the end of three furiongs. lost her chance. She showed a good turn of speed afterwards, but the task of making up the lost ground was too much. Princess Ann made most of 1 the pace, but Biddy Logan was always handv. and when she went to the front she ! had "the race safe. The winner is an [ American bred mare who was brought to ' New Zealand by the late C. James. This ! was her first success, but she is an attractive pacer, and if she keeps sound she should win a;ain. Le Todd, Coldwater. Donsitle, and Olive Huon were withdrawn from the Oamaru i Handicap, for which Golden Devon was made favourite, though he was not a great deal more fancied than Black Admiral. The field got away fairly well, though Harewood and Lady Embrace gave somo trouble, and before they had gone far Lady Embrace and Pine Yale broke badfy. AVharepiana made the early running, l.ut she was beaten a good way from home, and Black Admiral scored in decisive fashion. Dillon AVilkes put in a fast run three furlongs from home, but he was unable to continue his effort. Queen's Own ran a fair race in third place, but nothing had a chance with the winner, who has shown himself a genuine stayer. Backers of the favourite, Dumas, one of D. AVarre.n's team, in the Pukeuri Handicap, got a poor run, as he refused to leave the mark and came back to the enclosure. The race produced the best finish of the day so far. Glen Farg just got lip in time to beat Logan Lad on the post. Logan Lad had a useful lead along the back, but just failed in the final pinch. Ivy Audubon, from the 60yds mark, showed a good turn of speed in the middle stages of the race, 1 but as was the case with a number of other horses, the run up the straight against the strong wind proved too much. Judge Hancock, who was backed down to a very short price-, led from end to end in the Waitaki Handicap, and won in good style. Nelson McKinney kept him moving over the final circuit, but the American bred trotter never looked like being t«aten. It was, however, a poor exhibition of trotting on the part of the majority of the competitors. Backers were well on the mark in the Weston Handicap, for the first and second favourites, Brentloc and Donside, finished in that order. Brentloc, who was in front all the way, registered an attractive performance, and is a very promising young pacer. He races in the interests of Mr M. J. Hannon, president of the Club, and J. Henderson, the well-known Oamaru trainer, and naturally the win was a very popular one. N ' Harold Thorpe led from start. to finish in the Redcastle Handicap, and did not look like being beaten. Granite City was chasing him most of the way. and seemed certain of second place, but did not stay on as well as was expected. The Dash Handicap was, as usual, a good betting race. Prince Lyons was a good favourite, but he struck some trouble after covering about half the journey. Van Director, ridden by J. McLennan, owed his victory to his quick beginning, for Irish Whispers and Coldwater were closing on him at the finish.
