LYTTELTON NEWS.

Valedictory. Members of all branches of the Lyttelton railway staff gathered in the Railway Social Hall during the lunch hour yesterday to bid farewell to Mr E. V. R. Donthett, of the booking office staff, who has been transferred to Arthur's Pass, after being some years in the local booking office. On behalf of the Lyttelton railwiyroen, the stationmaster, Mr E.. Clarke, presented Mr'Donthett with a'marble clock, wishing him every happiness and success Tn his new appointment. In responding, Mr Douthett mentioned the amicable relations which existed between all branches of the service in Lyttelton. The Weather. Lyttelton, in common -with other parts of North Canterbury, experienced torrential rain yesterday. The downpour commenced at 6.30 a.m., and did not abate until late in the afternoon. When the fall was at its heaviest about 9 a.m., the side channels, especially on the corners, could not cope with the enormous volume of water, and, where the channels run down the steep hillsides, geysers of water could be seen shooting up at each culvert. So far very little damage is reported. As one resident put it, "All the slips that could come down are already down." Plumbers and builders were much iiv demand to deal with leaky roofs and guttering. The rain prevented any work being done on the waterfront.
